BMW 535 / Audi A5 Quattro / jag xf3.0

Hi, I’m looking at buying one of the above, including my p/x I have £6000 to play with, for the next 10 weeks I’m travelling 800 miles a week, I normally work all over the uk, so I’m after a little comfort, I normally have the boot full of tools.
The past 10 years I’ve had discoveries defenders and a couple of freelanders,
Any advice on what goes wrong or even what else to look for?
No vans I can’t find a decent one!

Can definitely vouch for the long distance cruising and load lugging ability of the XFS, I’ve run mine all over the place for the last 2 years and finished every trip feeling like I’ve just driven to the local shops.

I wouldn't necessarily even look at the 535d, a 530d would be quite sufficient. For that sort of milage I'd definitely choose a 530 or 730d. Excellent engines, lovely to drive. Suffice to say I'm sure the Audi and Jaguar would be nice enough but not a patch on the BMW and that lovely straight six.
Hi, I currently have a 2010 3.0 Jag XF (The N/A 240-ish bhp one) and it's great. Engine is an evolution of the 2.5l Ford V6 I think, sounds good and pulls well but you'll be dropping cogs to get a real move on.
I drive it mostly in sport or in sport and on the paddles. Gearbox is spot on.
Very comfy, I've driven it down to Switzerland so far, eats miles when you get it on the motorway - Just under 400miles from a tank on a run, under 300 when pushing.
Replaced wheel bearings and brakes more for peace of mind than anything else. Kind on tyres. No other bills or headaches. Added 12V bluetooth for my phone and use the satnav on that, car computer is a little old now.
Luxury spec is a little basic (2010) and the sound system is a little flat. Would benefit from heated seats and better stereo - That comes with the Premium Luxury and Portfolio I think.
My one has done 84k miles now and it's still great. Very impressed with the value for money. Been a good workhorse.
Only thing is it's as heavy as it looks. The engine/gearbox combo would be absolutely brilliant in something like a 7 or MX5, it loves being revved out, so almost a little out of character for a wafty barge - Though it's not as wafty as I make out.
This is my pick over the Audi. The BMW would be preferential, just adding my thoughts on the Jag.

The 3.0d XF engine does have a few inherent problems including split manifolds 8+ hour job, split intercooler connection and crank bearings which can spin. The latter could be down to oil dilution from dpf regens or just poor servicing.
However, if you get the XFS then it's 275ps and 600Nm of torque and Portfolio comes with the Meridian Surround system as standard and is excellent. Ride quality over our crap roads is strangely smooth, yet handing is sharp and precise. It's twin turbo in parallel sequential setup, so rather efficient.
There are other niggles though, some can result in serious bills if you don't know about them and do a fix in advance.
