Most economical private plate transfer

Hi all, I've put a deposit on a newer used car and am going to formally buy it (if all checks out) this Saturday.
My current car, that this newer one will replace, has a private plate which I'd like to move onto the newer car.
I could put the plate onto retention now and then add it to the newer car when I get the V5 through, but that'll mean an insurance admin fee to swap my current car from private to current; then another to swap the cover from old car to new; then another to swap new car onto private plate. All sounds a bit messy and unnecessary to me.
However, if the new car checks, out I'll have them deliver it to me. Could I have them wait until they can assign the private plate for me?
Is there a simpler and more cost effective way of doing this?

I changed my existing car back to it's original plate, (put my personalised plate on retention), insured my new car and once the v5 comes through I will transfer my plate onto the new car, all for £0 administration fee.. it has online portal (AXA).

The days of dealers doing plate transfers are long gone. They just won't entertain it.My current car, that this newer one will replace, has a private plate which I'd like to move onto the newer car.

You need to retain the plate now so that the new V5 arrives in time for you PX'ing your current car. Then you'll need to wait for the V5 for the "new" car to arrive before you can assign your plate to it. The fee for this is a one off now instead of 2 x £80 like it used to be
It's then up to your insurance company as to what admin fee's they cahrge

Left mine too late and now dealer is withholding £250 until my logbook arrives and I drop it in. You need to retain the plate now so that the new V5 arrives in time for you PX'ing your current car.

I bought a 2018 X5 for my wife back in May and the main dealer dealt with the plate transfer, so the 'days of dealers helping being long gone' probably depends on who you're dealing with and what level of customer satisfaction is important to them.
My current quandary is with another BMW main dealer who have initially stated that I'd need to wait for the V5 to come through before swapping the plate over. I've told them about their competition being willing and capable of doing it for me and I'm waiting for their response.
The only difference this time is the plate is on my current car and not on retention, so I've taken the advice here and put it onto retention via DVLA online.
As another poster said, AXA have allowed me to change the details for free, so that's nice too.
