Pensioner x-type estate replacement?

Hi all,
My retired father’s faithful X-Type diesel estate has finally expired. He paid around 2.5k for it seven years ago and had relatively trouble free 100k motoring but now at 170k on the clock it appears significant injector failure(s).
As he’s now retired he doesn’t do many miles. Annual mileage is in the region of 5 to 10 k miles.
He would like something similar to the X-Type estate for comfort and practicality, preference for petrol because of the low miles, complexity and concern for future emission zones appearing throughout the country.
Budget around 5k. The closer it is to the 5k the more he wants to like it akin to the X-Type, the cheaper it is the more bland and “utility” it can become (eg low spec fiesta or focus etc). He would also be maintaining it himself though is aware he might have to learn a bit more about diagnostics.
Any suggestions welcome.

I would recommend an IS250 would be a good fit for what your dad's looking for if he's willing to put up with the few negatives.
- cramped in the back and back seats don't fold.
- boot is small
- they're a pain to work on and parts are expensive
On the plus side it's smooth as silk to drive and infinitly reliable if looked after so chances are you wont be tinkering with it much. Only weak point is the Calipers. Yhe slide pins will need greasing at least once a year, as they stick quite easily. Not a big job though...
Rover 75V6 seems to be a good option, I've never owned or driven one but not heard anything bad about them, especially if you can find a well cared for one.
My pick would be a Honda Accord (8th Gen) 2.4
It's best all rounder. Reliable, easy enough to work on, has enough space front/back and drives very nice, almost feels like a 6pot comes with plenty of toys as standard too. Might struggle to find one under £5k though but it's worth hunting one down.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, or suggesting something you've already discounted, how about a newer petrol X-Type? The later 2.5 and 3.0 V6s would be ULEZ-compliant and within or around budget (albeit at the top end, if he's after another estate).
Beyond that I'm thinking Insignia wagon, primarily for the comfy and VFM factors.
