Shogun 3rd or something else

My uncle who is not computer literate is looking to buy a 4x4 to replace his van. He’s only doing servicing and so doesn’t need his Transit. But he also has to take the missus shopping and dogs the park etc

He’s spotted this locally:

He’s never owned one but would like some help and advice if possible and is open to other suggestions around the same price of £3000.

I've only driven the later generation and it wasn't the best. The engine was very agricultural sounding, terrible on economy and the steering was awful - turn the wheel then wait a second or two for the vehicle to turn. Plenty of space though. Good off road ability, but if he doesn't need that then it's extra maintenance and repairs.

Personally, I would look at something a little more refined like the Honda CRV. The EX is fully loaded, easy to slide into and very reliable.

Probably best to get in them all. I found the KIA Sorrento of same year as the CRV horrible. Very cheap inside, terrible sound system and the awd system has a known common fault which is a KIA only part at around £4k.

I can imagine the KIA to feel a little cheap inside. The Hyundai looks good it’s just the high tax that’s off putting. Plus it looks a little cheap inside. They are quite rare as I don’t think I’ve ever seen one. I think the Nissan Pathfinder looks okay. Probably a little better built and shouldn’t be too bad on parts etc. I think he said he will have a look at them all and see. Up to now the Shogun is the favourite. He may also look at a full sized one.

If he's just running about in it, it doesn't sound like he needs something as agricultural as the Shogun, I'd say look for the X5 as you'll get a decent one:

Only real thing to be wary of is the fuel filler necks rust and it gets into the fuel over time and kills the diesel pump which is a very expensive fix!, the 3.2 engine is quite agricultural and thirsty,if he doesn’t need the off road ability I’d probably go for something like an XC90 or X5.

That’s brilliant advice thank you. My worry with the X5 is the parts are expensive. The XC90 is a very good suggestion.

He might just about get a 90 Series Landcruiser Colorado in budget but chances are it will be a ropey one, and again if he doesn’t need the off road ability there’s not much point, although if you find one with a sound chassis they are very tough and low maintenance cars.

Don’t know much about X5 parts but didn’t think they’re bad cars to drive, although if I’m honest I’d more than likely take a punt on an old L322 Rangie at that money because they’re lovely cars to drive, although I’d no doubt regret it when it expensively crapped itself!.

I’ve a friend that bought an L322 for £3k and had spent more than that on it. The XC90 he has found is a T6 with the 2.9 which I don’t know much about but I can’t see any horror stories online. It’s been service and had a gearbox service, cambelt and a new thermostat and battery.

That doesn’t sound like a bad shout at all, personally I’d probably go for the diesel because I bet the petrol one really will like a drink but if he’s not doing many miles who cares, hope it’s a decent car.

Gearboxes in the t6 are problematic. If he wants an suv type, and as few issues as possibke, the answer is a Lexus RX

I am a massive Volvo fan, but don't know if I'd buy a 'cheap' XC90, and would definitely not buy a cheap 6 pot one! An early D5 with the manual box would be my go to XC90 at the lower price range. I really like them but as a VOC member have heard a fair few tales of woe

Edit, even at this end of the market, engine management light or whatever being on 'but Volvo garage says its ok'. Walk away quickly. Could be anything but is indicative of a lack of love..
