Yesterday I used my motorbike (a KTM 1290 Superduke GT) for the first time this year, and I got oiss wet through.
I'm looking for a suitable replacement with 4 wheels and a roof. What should I be considering?

There isn't one.

But a KTM X-Bow, Ariel Atom or one of the 7 replicas is as close as you'll get on 4 wheels. Certainly some of the 7s have roofs. All are daft money for what they are.

If you want motorbike levels of engagement, buy a waterproof jacket, a V-Wipe and man up would be my advice.

KTM X-Bow - £60k+
Ariel Atom - £40k+

All too expensive. I know I'll not match the performance or engagement but I'm hoping to keep some of the excitement.

I have an Elise and a Ducati, the former can’t touch the latter for rawness and thrills. The only thing I’ve driven that comes close is an atom.

For the budget it would have to be a caterham clone kit with an engine built for torque and as light as you can make it. That still leaves you with the weather problem, hence I’d say just buy a warm/hot hatch for commuting on grey days and keep the bike.

As a tool for fun I doubt at 10k you are going to find anything to replace the bike.

Up your budget a bit and an SLK55 AMG would be fun. Stonking engine and the wind in your hair.

Why did you edit out the bit where I say they're all daft money, then reply to me that they're too expensive? Strange way to converse.

It rains in Britain.

If getting wet through is the issue then investing in some waterproof clothing may be the answer.

I am sure £10K could spread across some decent waterproof clothing, an almost new Suzuki SV650 or used KTM Duke 790 and an economical car (Fiesta, Audi A2, Aygo/C1/107) to use when you don't want to ride.

My car cost one fifth of my motorcycle but the bike was a good deal and the car is a cast off from a relative.

As much fun to ride as a Duke 1290R?:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMhV-IXQOTo

I've ridden three or four Duke 790s. I almost got a ride on a 1290R but it was a grey, slightly damp day and my insurance was due for renewal in a couple of weeks and not getting out on the 1290R may have been good for my insurance NCB and driving licence. One of the reasons I've not bought a 790 or 890 is don't know how much I'd use the performance. They're a lovely ride though.

The answer is motorcycle and car, not motorcycle or car.

You're not the first to think along these lines... and you won't be the first to be disappointed. There is no car that can replicate, or come close, to what a bike offers. There are a few that will be similar in some ways, but... usually with huge compromises. There are plenty of fast cars out there, but they generally don't provide the excitement/involvement of a bike. For me, the only cars that have ever had anything like the drama of a bike have been hand built hot rods - they come with their own impractical aspects, and aren't cheap. Most minimal kit cars will be a disappointing, damp and impractical experience - unless you are of a very specific mindset.
Sounds to me like the most important aspect is the roof and heater, in which case pretty much any car will do (other than mine, which have neither!).

You're only taking the bike out for the first time this year with the glorious weather we've had??????? Plus the fact you can check the weather before going out & most waterproofs do a good job of keeping you dry.

I wouldn't bother looking for a car to replace the bike.

The answer to your question is that there isn't a car that'll come close to your Superduke for thrills, the VX220 is a very good car but it's no bike:

I disagree with most bikers on this

Most bikers can't ride for st - they only accelerate hard on the straights and pussy around on the corners - there is a bloody good reason for this, it's because they don't want to get hurt / die

I have far more fun in a decent car where I can slide the back at will with the throttle and occasionally 4 wheel drift and play on the edge of grip - with the right car on the right roads (which are increasingly hard to find)

The best cars for this are various kitcars although many aren't 100% watertight either

Personally the best compromise (for me) is a supercharged MX5 Mk1 and a motor bike but an MR2 V6 or a MR2 VVTLI would be fine too

Here's a few I've been considering:

Thing is, the O.P. doesn't say which aspects of the bike he will miss... So it's anyone's guess what he wants out of a car - speed, acceleration, noise, feedback, drama, neighbour impressing, comfy seats...
I agree about some cars being lots of fun, mine are all minimal and fairly low powered, but I enjoy them all in the right situations - funnily enough, I rode a 1290R and "fun" wasn't a word I'd associate with it. I love my little kit car, it allows me to have fun in the winter (I rarely use it in good weather)... without the fear of sliding off and ending up dead! But, it's horrible to drive with the roof up, so I tend to just leave it down and get wet - sounds like that's exactly what wasn't wanted.
MX5s are great fun, but again, without knowing what's wanted... they have a "heater" tho'!!! biggrin

The obvious answer is some kind of Seven style car. You won't get much Caterham for that money and anything you do see is likely to be old, or in need of work, or, most likely, both!

You can find plenty of Westfields at around £10k, and there are several other alternatives around too, for example Tiger Cat or Avon, MK Indy, GBS Zero, MNR etc., many of which may have bike engines. There are also exo (Atom) style kit cars around - MEV Exocet, MEV/RTR Rocket and the (rarer) Deronda.

The problem with all these is that (by all accounts) the weather gear isn't particularly great (or is non-existent for the exos!), so you would still most likely end up getting wet!

You could look at something like a Fury, originally manufactured by Sylva, then Fisher and now Fury Sports cars. Full width bodywork with the option of a full (original Elan) screen and soft top which should keep you drier!

Many years ago, I worked with a guy who was toying with the idea of getting a JZR as his sensible winter alternative to his Triumph Daytona does it have to be 4 wheels? hehe

Citroen 2cv!! Skinny tyres, as much lean as a bike, hugely satisfying to plot your lines through corners making sure you don't lose momentum, roof back for wind in the hair. Take the seats out other than the drivers seat and you might even manage to take a motorbike with you!!

I ised to stop riding in winter so my “best” bike didn’t suffer but missed it too much.

Bought a second, cheap bike to run all year round as well. Made a huge difference.

That would still entail buying some decent waterproofs.

I've gone the long way round once in the rain and cold as returning to motorcycling I wanted to brush up on my riding in the wet.

As others have said you're on a hiding to nothing here. I've always thought that even the lowliest 50cc shopping bike beats any car for fun and involvement, so if you've had anything bigger then nothing on 4 wheels will come close and especially not anything for £10k. Tbh having a GSX-R600 pretty much killed my enthusiasm for chasing thrills in cars. I'd probably not worry about performance and go for a convertible as suggested above.

I have to disagree with your statement I have witnessed lots of riders who can ride & take corners with ease without any form of risk of injury let alone death.

Someone driving a kit car swiftly is more at risk than someone on a bike because they have no protection (leathers crash helmet etc) whatsoever.

Like all things the more you do it the better you get, a Superduke is a riot of a bike that tends to bring out the worst in me wink

And I will have to disagree with you wink because they can't take them as fast as cars and a wise biker won't take a corner faster than he can see / stop and he can't stop very well on a corner

No protection other than the fibreglass and steel cage surrounding him laugh

Plus there is far more chance of recovering a skid in a car and far more likely to be able to go up a verge or through a hedge without injury
