Wouldn’t be a weekend without one of these threads would it.
So a reshuffle of the garage means the Golf R is leaving the fleet next week the finances are being redistributed accordingly leaving around £5k to find myself a daily.
Time is properly against me so here is the challenge

£5000ish budget
Needs to seat 4 and ideally have space for the dog
Cover between 60 and 100 miles daily without bankrupting me
Prefer petrol over diesel but guess I have to be open to both

I know how good you lot are at this so let’s see what you come up with

Thanks in advance

At that sort of daily mileage I think I'd go for diesel.

Anything petrol that is vaguely economical probably isn't a great place to spend that much time every day!

I'd probably choose a BMW 330d, 530d or Mercedes C or E 320Cdi

Something with the VAG 1.4 ACT engine would probably be the best petrol option if you can get something for that budget. Easy 50+mpg with 150bhp, we had a Leon with it and took it up to 100k miles with no major problems.

Mk 4 Mondeo. The 2.0 diesel will go for miles, bags of space, very comfortable. Ideal "do everything" car.

How about a Skoda Octavia vRS (mk2)?

Hatch version:

Or estate:

Or if you don't mind a bigger car, a Superb is well... superb (IMO) smile

Loads of kit, comfy and average 45mpg over a mix of motorway/town easy enough.

Diesel is probably better if you're doing 60+ miles a day even with the current price difference, however the petrol's aren't half bad MPG wise to be honest, and you wouldn't have to worry about the DPF.
