Good afternoon!
I've been scouting at getting my self a car, I've shortlisted my searches to two specific cars and need you guys to add your opinions on each to help me choose...

The first car that I've looked at was a 2016 Mercedes A200d, 2.1 Diesel with automatic gearbox, road tax of only 20£, insurance group of 18 and a high spec "premium". Millage about 30,000-40,000.

The second car is a 2019 Seat Ibiza, 1.0 Petrol with DSG automatic gearbox, road tax of £165-£180, insurance group of 14 and a highest spec of "Xcullance Lux". Millage about 20,000-25,000.

I'm unsure about the Mercedes value after 4 years that I'm wanting to keep it for, unsure about diesel for school runs (I've read that AdBlue helps a lot) as well as the outdated technology that it has compared to the Seat. The insurance is also a little bit more however tax is cheaper...

For the Ibiza, i'm also unsure about the value after the 4 years, not too sure on the 1.0 TSI engine with just 3 cylinders especially that I plan some long journeys up in Europe as well as the driving comfort and quality of the interior.

Could someone put down their opinion/experiences with these cars and guide me please.

Diesel makes no sense at all for doing mainly short journeys, stick to a petrol.

Is there a particular reason why these two are where you ended up?

They seem like very different cars to me, so I'm confused as to what it is that's eliminated everything else.

It seems that you don't want anything too big, but do want comfort for the occasional longer distance cruise... What's your regular usage like, though?
Do you do a regular motorway trip (commute or otherwise) to keep a DPF particularly happy?

What else have you considered and rejected?

Just curious if any of this might be suggestive of which way to go...

I do school runs, on top of that I do about 15 miles each way to see girlfriend and some bigger journeys such as going sea side. I do also plan to go Europe and I just don't think that the 1.0 will make that...

Well I do travel some motorways not on daily though, I will come across one maybe once per two weeks depends what are the plans, DPF I assume will stay happy due to the AdBlue?

I considered Golfs, Fiestas, A4, C Class, I cut these out due to the looks/insurance prices. I need a hatchback that's good on mpg and fun/premium to drive. Maybe you could suggest something I should look at?

What's your actual budget? If you state that then people will be able to help you out with some suggestions.

It's your usage that makes petrol the better option in your case.

Budget is £17,000, must be dealer can't be private due to financial agreement with my loan provider.
Is the diesel really not gonna manage some short journeys?

It’s a massive issue. In fact I have just had them changed on my c class today.

They break, are expensive to repair and most importantly are unavailable for purchase.

Mine started playing up in June and the parts were delivered Monday.

If it wasn’t for my friendly MB independent doing some ecu shenanigans my car wouldn’t have been drivable for 3 months.

If you're doing a 30 minute journey every week then yes a diesel could work but if you're not then you could end up with a bill for £1000's.

Also get actual quotes on insurance because there are times when cars with a higher group are cost the same as something from lower groups.

You have a healthy budget that'll get you in something that'll be a very nice place to be & that'll do trips to Europe with ease.

Infiniti Q30 Sport these are exactly the same car as the A Class apart from the bodywork & these imo have the nicer interior out of the two, you can get them in Petrol :

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202203153...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202205175...

You'll also get a 1 year Approved Used Warranty on the first two cars.

If you can make diesel work then they come with the same 2.1d found in the A220d.

Q30 2.1 Diesel Sport:

Sounds like petrol would be more sensible.

So criteria is basically... Not too big, auto, reasonable running costs and comfortable for longer trips?

I'm particularly fond of Volvo's so I'd probably look at V40's (T2 or T3 engines - tax is the same, T2 is more frugal, T3 is quicker)... Barely any bigger than the A-class.

Examples:

Partly throwing it out as it fits your more premium feel preference but isn't on the list of things you'd already discounted.

Ultimately though, you'll want to draw up a shortlist, drive them and then look into whether there are any particular weaknesses of the cars you enjoyed.

Here’s a petrol A class (current shape)

Higher mileage, but nothing to worry about
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202204285...

£165 pa to tax

Or a vw polo gti.

Super low mileage too.
