Hi all

It’s my first post, and I’m really desperate to pick everyone’s brains!

Today I had a dreaded call; “I think your 1M has been cloned”.

On the 21st June, I put all my money together and upgraded from my e92 M3 to my 1M. It’s Valencia orange and a cracker!

But today, I got contacted by people in the business explaining that there is an identical 1M that’s been in storage for 3 years, and the owner was alerted to replacement log book emails. He has had a police inspector visit his car and confirm his is the original using the “secret” hidden number on the car with BMW?

The owner of the other car contacted the police on the 4th June onwards via email, detailing that he believed that his vehicle had been cloned. Hampshire police didn’t act on this info, and a few weeks later I purchased my car.

I did all the checks, such as VINs, log book and used Car Vertical. No alarm bells were triggered.

The only hindsight concern, was that the service book was missing, however the seller had trade plates, brought the car closer to me for collection (not a websites dealer), and he also had a list of the dealerships the car had visited for its work, which I contacted them all and they confirmed the car had been to visit…well the original car anyway.

The money was paid via bank transfer.
My steps are to contact the police, likely have the vehicle seized. Then I will look to recoup money from;

The seller - with help from my banks fraud team
Car vertical
The Police

The process of contacting the police will happen when I’m back from my holiday on Monday.
If you have any advice or guidance on how to approach this, who to contact for help, and anything else that please send it my way. This is unfortunately my life’s savings and the first time I’ve experienced anything like this.

Thank you

There will be a VIN stamped somewhere in the engine bay. What does this say?

Does the engine number match the one on the V5?

None of that sounds good. Not got any advice to give you in this instance, but I hope it all gets sorted and you get your money back.

Not a good position. Oddly I've heard of a number of cloned 1M.

Take proper legal advice immediately. Given how much money's involved it'll be worth it.

The original owners car is in a storage facility.
The storage facility saw the cars photo shoot, and contacted the photographer.

Will get the car inspect when I’m back off holiday.

VIN in the window, door seal and engine bay all match the log book. V5 numbers were corrected and allowed me to change ownership.

Either a massively elaborated piss take, or a scam. But seems like if it is a clone, they’ve managed to get all of the cars details and a history of where the original was serviced/visited etc. Inside job? Idk

I only got the call today, but as you can imagine I’m startled and stressed, trying to make sense of it!

As others have said, get proper legal advice.

Try an OBD reader to check the VIN, most inexpensive ones can do this.

What's the minimum post count before you can become a victim of car cloning?

This.

If it wasn’t the police or the DVLA but a random person. I’d take it with a pinch of salt

Yup, if I'd just dropped the cash on a 1M and I found out today it might be a ringer, my first action would be to post here, my second to wait until Monday when I come back from holiday!

Yea.. given the money involved, there's no way I'd be able to enjoy the holiday and I'd be trying to get home sooner if possible...

But if it's not possible to get back sooner, then I'd probably try to get as much info as possible so I could spring into action the moment I got back - so maybe that's what OP is doing?

Read the OP again , "police inspector looked at the other car and confirmed it's the real one "

Though anything is possible .

That post makes you look a genuine smartarse tt. Someone is worried they've been scammed out of a lot of money.

You think its worth accusing them of lying to try and look clever. Pathetic.
