Volkswagen Phaeton - Worth Buying?

I’m on the lookout for a car for my Dad. He’s got around £3k to spend as he’s only doing around 10 miles to work as he’s near retirement.

Or it could bankrupt me. They look like a good car. It’s when it throws a massive bill at you which is the value of the car. Maybe worth looking at something else.

It will be thirsty on a 10 mile trip- will just be warming up and then the journey is at an end.
If your father is happy with (at a guess) 20mpg then go for it

Depends if he is on a budget with only £3K to spend, if anything goes wrong it will likely cost a fair few quid to put right.

Similar age/price-point to the Phaeton and its been reliable over the 6-7 years he has had it.

Also has a Mini JCW but prefers using the Lexus as the JCW is pretty hard over bumps and potholes.

Almost 20 year old engine, manufacturing has come on a lot in the couple of decades.

Up till 2 years ago I had a 2004 Mondeo 3.0 V6 as a commuting / station car. Was great for it's age, even had working heated & cooled seats but the mpg was horrific, mid-teens around town and only low-30's on a run.

I might show him the Lexus. As he has one a number of years ago. Another car that maybe a possibility a Honda Legend?

Legend a good call, a far more "safe" option than a Phaeton in likely reliability.

A 3grand Phaeton will not be cheap to run, even if doing extremely low miles p.a.

Has he thought about an E class? Plenty sensible versions around.

My 2.5 KV6 75 is averaging 21 mpg. Despite being extremely slow. Similarly does mid teens round town.

That second Phaeton is diesel though, only does 29mpg and has £630 annual tax? Your cars above are both petrol?
