Subaru Forester XT (2014)
Discussion
I've just bought a 2018 XT.
The CVT is smooth, plenty of power delivery with a bit of turbo lag to start.
S# mode is a bit hoonigan.
Good points.
Excellent engine. Slightly detuned WRX engine .
Good ride height.
Responsive steering.
Interior is utilitarian and hard wearing.
Switches are robust.
Bad points
25mpg on E5, if you're driving Miss Daisy you might touch 30mpg.
VED is a bit steep.
Front left driveshafts go around 70k miles. They're around £700. Main dealers have a stock so it's a known issue. Dealer only item as well.
Oil pans can corrode.
Front lower control arm bushes can perish. Main dealers swap out the arm, independents can press new bushes on. I believe the STi LCA fits with a different mounting bolt.
Generally a good bit of fun.
Independents can flush the CVT oil rather than a full strip down to clean the magnetic filter as well. Probably worth doing despite being a non-service item.
Being a boxer engine, the air filter and battery have to come out to change spark plugs. Add a bit of time to labour.
Just find yourself a decent Subaru mechanic who knows the ins and outs.
