Hi all,

So I'm considering selling my M3 F80, which I've owned and loved for the past 18 months. I paid around 38k, WBAC and my local BMW dealer saying they'll give around 35k for it. BMW said going by prices they go for, they'd advise trying to sell privately towards 40kish... this was 2 or 3 weeks back. This was when I was chatting to him about the new M3/4's and he was obviously trying to sell one to me...

Issue is what to buy. Reasons for selling are basically getting my money back, I spend too long driving it for the sake/fun of it, and I now need to dedicate more time to work/business, so don;t want tempation of going to the shop turning into a 2 hour detour, plus the car just wants to be 'driven' and regularly get mild anxiety each time a brown envelope comes through the letter box biggrin. So once you factor all of that in, plus fuel costing me close to 500 a month, I want to move on and go back to an a to b car, like I had no issues owning before. I don;t really want to keep it and just attempt to use as an a to b anyway, just seems like a total waste owning it unless getting some half decent use from it.

Anyway, I previously had a civic 1.8 (14 plate), pretty dull, not nice looking etc. So naturally I went to Honda and test drove the newer 1.5 Civic, which seemed decent for what I want. Right size for family car, not too big or small, like the front but not the rear. 180bhp, so bit of power there, but nothing too focused, which is what I want. Gear changes felt clunky and nowhere near as smooth as the the m3 semi auto, although not as hard a ride of course.

Prices are tough one, I guess you could say I've benefitted with the m3, as typically it would probably be worth 30k now, but struggling to get my head around potentially trading the m3 for slighly newer (m3 17 plate) for a 3/4 year old civic that were going for 20-22k. Guess you could say an element of wanting to have my cake and eat it, but Corolla's going for similar too. Guess I was hoping to get something in the 15kish bracket, but appears you have to buy much older if looking in that bracket. Other option is a Golf 150ps but had awful experiencing with an 07 gtd and electrics years back and other relatively expensive things. Plus generally vw doesnt score as well on reliability v Honda, Toyota etc (although not sure how reliable they are in recent years since introducing smaller turbo engines...). TBH I'd probably lean towards a Golf as they seem the ultimate decent, respectable, if somewhat bland (if not buying a gti or r) car, if it wasn;t for reliability concerns and sometimes head scractching prices my vw dealer is currently listing them at...

Must say I do like the look of the new Civic thats about to be released. Their best looking car, well, ever imo. Hybrid only, decent econonomy, size, power etc. But I've always been against buying new historically, as dont tend to get as much car for your money, heavy early years deprection etc. But when Honda dealer is asking for 22kish for a 2 or 3 year old outgoing Civic with thousands of miles on the clock, wondering if new one may be worth considering. Seems tough pill to swallow though, selling my M3 and not getting much change back, going into a nice, but very average car like a Civic...

Cheers.

Funnily enough I had an email the other day asking if I wanted to swap the F82 M4 too. I've had it 18 months as well and paid pretty much the same as you did. The problem I've got is there isn't any other BMW that I'm interested in having(apart from the new M4 and I feel that they are still too expensive).

Sorry I can't help with your next purchase, but I was just fascinated with our similarities with the cars.

Sold my 2019 M4 two months ago for a number of reasons; decent offer, first child due, loss of track day insurance and now minimal mileage.

Now looking to replace it with a used C63 estate to limit depreciation exposure and some V8 theatre again. Unsure what reasons I could justify to myself to go from F80 M3 to generic new Civic. Cheap running costs negated by depreciation, Shirley?

NP. Yeah, the M4's starting to show up lightly used now. He was mainly trying to sell a brand new M4 for limited time 4.5% interest. He mentioned they were getting a new M3 in with 15k's worth of extras. I popped down later in the day when it was due to arrive...it had already sold. Assume for around 80 odd k as asking was going to be 90...

Yes indeed, didn;t add all the points that crossed my mind, as it had gone on for too long plus only had few hours sleep, so brain not quite in gear biggrin.

Thats the issue isn;t it with 'generic' type cars. Unless I buy something where depreciation has done its thing. But in the current market even Civic's Golfs, Corollas/Auris are 20k+ for 3 year old or so versions. Even the Civic before this current outgoing ones seem crazy priced. So then you think that well the M3 will depreciate, but unlikely at anywhere near the rate of a new/newish generic car, which muddies the waters/my thoughts about the situation..+ you get to drive something (I think) is an experience/fun...
A mate suggested selling mine now, then buying some old car to carry me over for a while until market (may) return to a bit more normaility. But if I'm honest I don;t want to buy something that old for various reasons...

I've been without a car for two months and only now starting to miss it. Working from home and commuting by train to work has helped. Like you mentioned, I'd planned to cash out and wait for the impending crash. Now I think there will be no crash, more a slow softening, I might as well step back in to the car market. I just need to buy right.

If I had a F80 instead of an F82, I'd probably have kept it. Practical, good residuals and makes a better noise than the post-2018 M4s with the petrol particulate filters. Better the devil you know for you?

Gosh, I definitely couldn;t do that, as I'm a single dad and where I live transport links arent great... Well, could use taxis a lot, but not really feasible.

Its a good point re crash, I know some countries around world where used car prices have seemed crazy for many years. Possibility that may happen over here now, and the market may not return to how we knew it pre covid/Brexit. Particularly with the fuel, electric stuff in the mix.

Yes re devil you know. Not sure how yours has been, but mine has been rock solid, just changing tyres once. and then usual servicing (which has been surprisingly ok... nothing shockingly higher than previous run of the mill cars so far ).

As you are finding, there are alternatives - and you will find someone to buy your M4. Now is probably a better time to sell than over the winter months. What is less clear to me is how swapping an M4 for a mid-spec hatchback meets your needs?

I think it's important to be really sure about what you are trying to achieve. Are you aiming to have more utility, to free-up some cash, reduce outgoings etc? I think you'd have to drop towards a £10k hatchback and keep it some years to meet the latter criteria.

Mine cost me very little to run over 2.5 years. £300 RIS and a £300 first service. Tyres lasted well considering, same with brake pads. No warranty work needed either. Fuel averaged 23mpg but that included lots of urban driving and a number track days.
