4x4 / 4WD budget of £10K ?

I was looking at a 2010 (ish) Range Rover Vogue or Discovery 4 as the top of my list but i just keep hearing reliability horror stories and the expense to fix things. I suppose i could risk one that has a great history. Do they really have this big red flag?

Looking for :

Quick (ish)
Enough room to camp in back for trips away with the dog
Comfortable and a bit of luxury and toys

One other option was a Grand Cherokee - anyone have any experience of these?

I like the more 'rugged and boxy' look of 4x4s....cars like the Q7 and X5 just look really boring to me.

Another leftfield option was a 4x4 Mitsubishi Delica...

It goes against the quick bit but a Freelander 2 HSE would be a good option, they are by far the most reliable LR product. I'd certainly take the chance over anything german.

Left field but how about a Volvo XC90 4.4 V8?

can be had for less than 10k, sounds amazing, roomy, comfy, doesn't have that many "toys" but a good all rounder.

if you get an imported one as well, cheaper on tax and ULEZ compliant.

Forgot to say the EX/FX are CAZ/ULEZ compliant too if that's something you need to consider.

Couple of others to look at, all well withing budget. Nissan Pathfinder, Kia Sorrento, Jeep Commander, Ford Explorer (a cool rhd on autotrader), Skoda Superb Outdoor, Dodge Nitro, VW Toureg Ssangyong Rexton and last but not least and well under budget Vauxhall Antara.

When you say camp on the back etc....do you mean literally sleep in the vehicle?

You'd struggle with anything listed so far.

If you don't mind horrific fuel consumption are 6ft tall or under and will consider running a jap import then a Nissan elgrand would fit the bill.

You can sleep quite comfortably in quite a few listed so far. As long as the load bay, when the seats are down, will take a camp bed you're sorted. Even my Dacia Logan will take a camp bed or a double airbed. I've done 7 nights in this. Did two weeks in my old Honda CR-V. Even the misses is happy enough to camp out in fair weather for a few nights and the little one loves it. I have a boot tent/awning for it too.

A good choice, it is just big enough to sleep in and the Sd4 spec is 190 bhp so while not 'fast' in PH terms it is by no means a slow car. Reliability compared to some of LRs bigger offerings is much improved.

Its just the look of it,i find that whole suv/ estate shape really boring,same goes for stuff like the Q7/X5. This is why the Discovery 4 was my first choice,i just love that boxy old school LR look...but the reliability horror stories are really putting me off.

If it was the old skool 90s volvo estates,now youre talking..i love that boxy wedge shape!

Im going to look more into the grand cherokee...anyone know about the reliability of them?

Yeah,they look ok,but nowhere near as big as a D4 in the back? How come the reliability was much improved with these?

Yeah,this is why i was also looking at a 4wd Delica aswell. You can get a decent one for the budget..

Repossessions UK so probably means the last owner ran it on a shoe string although it does look to be in good condition and MOT history looks good. I quite like that..

Its butt ugly imo...this is exactly what rules out 90% of cars for me haha..i know it sounds shallow,but i like to have good looking cars!
