Good cars.

Try get the 2.4D de-tuned 5 cylinder for reliability and pure smoothness in my opinion, look out for door lock failures also, quite common and pricey fix when they fail, well were common among the V60 variant (which I guess is shared platform and parts)

Are you purposely ruling out 2012-17 later versions of the first generation based on cost?

I had a 2016 D4 FWD from new and it was great, the post 2014(?) Volvo 2 litre diesel and 8 speed auto is a good combination.

SWMBO has a 64 plate D4, brilliant car, comfy and safe. Has winter pack with heated seats and heated front windscreen.

Not quite...

The D5 is a 5-cylinder 2.4 diesel, great engine - there's also a detuned version "2.4D".

Then there's the D3 and D4 that (in 5-cylinder form) are a slightly smaller version of the same basic design (2.0 rather than 2.4 liters).

Realistically you can't go too far wrong with any of them as long as they've been serviced properly... The 2.4D and D5 are full of character and really reliable too.
