Early Volvo v90 Cross Country

Need a new family hack, for commuting, university trips, tip runs, dog carrying, long journeys when the incoming EV is too troublesome etc etc

Quite fancy an early V90 CC which appear to be available for high teens, what do I need to know

Engines to avoid must have spec, weak spots etc

If you are looking for similar options to compare I'd have a look at the Skoda Superb, they do a version that they may have badged the Outdoor, rather than Scout like other Skodas.

Then there's the Subaru Outback or older Legacy Outback.

Audi A6 All-road probably comes closest as a direct rival and there's plenty at various budgets.

Then there is the Passat Alltrack and a few smaller offerings such as the Leon X-perience and Peugeot 508 RXH.

Also the Saab 9-3X if you want a rare Swede with lots of Króna to spare.

I looked earlier and couldn't find a single one on Auto Trader. They can't have sold many, not sure its the awd drive car I'd go for but it certainly hits the brief.

Thanks lots of alternatives but swaying towards a V90 or A6 Allroad, I would be tempted by a V70 Xc but the later low mile ones seems to be same price as an early V90.

The D5 is quite good at blowing the compressor hose off, leaving you with a D4 power output. T4 isn’t great in comparison to the diesels.

Some need the odd software reboot and if you’re on lower miles, they need an annual service unfortunately.

That’s about it really.

You can't get the T4 in the CC, only T5 and T6 (along with D4 & D5). If you're only doing low miles, petrol's fine, however you'll only get 26-7 mpg around town up to 35-40 on a run.

Apart from the D5 power pulse pipe coming adrift, there's not been many issues highlighted. Just be aware servicing is expensive at Volvo dealers!

Unless you're looking for a pano roof or the upgraded sound system, I wouldn't let that worry you as the 'base' CC is very well specced. They all come with Pilot Assist and the 2019 MY has the upgraded dash top.

I had an insignia tourer of this vintage and compared to all of my Volvo S90's, V90, Audi A6 and A4...that insignia blew them all out of the water in regards to comfort.

I have a 69 plate v90 but the r-design. It’s a D4 auto and honestly it’s a bag of poo. If you mainly do town driving don’t expect much out of 300-350 miles. The gearbox and engine are dreadfully slow, there’s big lag when say pulling out of a junction where the gearbox hasn’t got the gear.

You can press your foot to the floor and I’d say wait 4seconds easily before things start to happen so you’re circa 5/6s before you get a gear the engine revs and you’re away.

I know most are going this way but all the controls are on that central tablet so you have to look down to change things. Mine also has a tendency to crash a lot so you get nothing for 5 minutes until it restarts itself.

As others have said servicing is expensive it’s anywhere from £350-£580 spending it’s a minor or major service.

Good things are the boot is big, seats are comfy, they depreciate like hell so you get a lot for your money.

Yeh sorry mate i didn't want to put you that off it but i wouldn't be buying a diesel. the petrol could be better i just don't know. It could also be my car is a friday afternoon jobby but i've had to go to the dealer today and the service guy was saying a lot of customers seem to be having issues with the software on the infotainment system.

Gearboxes are absolutely fine, I actually notice a huge amount of lag in DSG's now compared to the Volvo gearbox. Like all auto's, sometimes it gets a little confused and may pause for a split second. Power is instant though, I put my foot to the floor and car goes...no lag like he's described.

People rave about Volvo seats but I find them decidedly uncomfortable.
