M class or Touareg for 16k

Pondering options for a next car, I’m looking at large SUVs.
It’s got to be able to tow at least 2.5t, 4x4 is essential and I’m really not keen on top band tax. It also needs to be euro 6.
Ideally something with a bit of go for overtaking on country roads!
Budget would be about 16k.

What are Mercedes M class like for reliability and in general? I’d probably be looking at the 350d with 80k is on it from around 2013.
Or would something like a Touareg be a better bet? Similar miles and age.

Normally I’d just buy another BMW but the euro 6 X5s aren’t in budget.
I’ve previously owned a Q7 and didn’t really get on with it, but that was quite a while ago and my priorities are different now.

Skoda Kodiaq - we pull a horse trailer with one, no issues. 4x4, so a decent set of tyres on it and you'll get most places.

That’s a good option, I should have said that it’s got to be auto. My left knee isn’t in the best condition.
The Kodiaq would require a little budget creep, but get me into a far younger car…

I had a 3 litre diesel Touareg R Line. Great car on the open road, but absolutely huge. Just too big for the narrow back lanes, so it had to go.
I'd take one over an X5 or Merc, especially once the warranty has run out.

It’s 400mm shorter than the current L200 pickup, even though the roads round my house are all single track I’m not that concerned!

How did you like the Touareg overall (apart from size)?

Have a look at Jeep Grande Cherokees.

Youll probably be able to buy a slightly newer vehicle for your cash.

It was the width of the thing that was an issue for me. I got fed up with brushing against the Cornish hedges on both sides of the road at the same time.

It was actually a very capable car, very refined and a decent turn of speed. Fairly economical on a run too
I did have a problem with the adblue system, but sorted under warranty. Software issue.

Leased a touareg back when there were deals to be had (just over £400 per month for an rline plus), fantastic car. Just bought a 2016 plate after our Kodiak lease had to be returned, forgot how good they are!

Bought through VW approved scheme so, 2 year warranty, 2 services if we took finance and the service before it leaves was comprehensive, anything that looked like it needed doing in the next year was done (invoice supplied for about £900 from memory, included new pads and discs and various other bits and pieces). A quick look and there are a couple in the vw network at your budget. When I compared prices when I bought they were no more expensive than independents that weren't offering warranties, services etc. Something to consider on a big car where basic consumables can be expensive!

Hadn’t really thought about the jeep, they use much of the Mercedes stuff too judging by reviews?

I suppose the main question when buying older high mileage cars is which one will break the least often?
