Which petrol Estate car?

Looking for a petrol estate car.

Needs to be petrol due to ULEZ and don’t fancy diesel due to increasing fuel prices.

Would be used for running up and down the motorway 60/80 miles most days so something comfortable but also reliable.

Models I currently have in mind are;

BMW 320i/330i touring 2008-2012
Audi A4 Avant 2.0/1.8 tfsi 2008-2012
Audi Allroad 2.0 tfsi 2008-2012
Or possibly the Skoda superb or Octavia of similar years to the above.

Top price being around 8k

Any other recommendations or any information regarding any of these engines would be appreciated!

Honda Accord. 2.0 engine, very comfy, plenty quick, loads of space, great handling, boringly reliable, even looks good.

The later Accord tourers are very very good if a little bland, I had an older shape 2.4 tourer and it was an amazing mile muncher with a huge boot. Accord is definitely a good suggestion.

Apologies, you are correct! At the moment there are no non-cat cars in budget. There are a handful under £9K if you fancy a haggle.

It looks like you can get Octavia's with the 1.4T 150BHP engine. The reason I am suggesting this engine is it is a good unit and you could get a newer car than the Beemers and Audi's suggested.

I'd chuck in Volvo V50 and Saab 9-3 as alternatives. Maybe a Mondeo

V60 T3/4 would be a good shout, a well looked after 9-3 is also a comfy if dated car too. I'd say V50s are beaten by most of the other suggestions.

None of the above. All these engine have reliability issues.

Mondeo is now out of fashion, but I have a Titanium estate on 18" wheels. It is comfortable, has plenty of gadgets. The ride is very good and the handling is excellent (...when the steering assist is disabled in software) on all roads, both even when fully laden

It has been painless to own for 3 years.

I do like the V50 a lot and does seem to be a lot of car for the money. From what I know Volvo do have a good reliability reputation.

Insignia petrol probably more reliable as a petrol than all those, often overlooked. Certainly probably get alot newer car too.

Agreed. Especially the VAG engines which often suffer from high oil usage.

Mine is a 1.5 Ecoboost. It is not a dragster off the mark and it needs revs, but the performance is actually reasonably decent in third gear upwards, and plenty quick enough for overtaking.

Mine is on 18" rims and not on "sport" suspension, for which I am glad. The estate presumably has stiffer rear suspension than the hatch. It is controlled, composed, doesn't roll and not hard riding. It can be hustled along quickly on twisty roads. I suspect it is the sweetspot for chassis.

The Standard halogen headlights are not the best (although not as bad as some people make out) that may or may not bother you, depending upon where you drive. The LED lamps are better.


Ps. A Tesla owning friend commented on how responsive the Sync 3 infotainment screen was.

My choice would be the Octavia estate, all the car you'd ever need.

I had a 2016 Octavia 1.4 TSI 150 SE-L estate for a few months, until I could take no more of it. I tried to resolve some design/value engineered issues. After a drive to Snowdonia with my wife on board, in which the car greatly disappointed, I traded it in the following week.

-Great engine, very poor everything else. Ugh.

The Mondeo is several levels better as a car, other than the engine.

The vRS will have a better chassis and setup than the TSI did, but everything else will be similar.

I have to say despite diesel costing more on a run a diesel will be 25-35mpg better than the equivalent powered petrol & as you can see your budget gets you a ULEZ compliant diesel which is more suited to your usage.
