Petrol for 25-30k PA?

I've got another thread going about a comfortable auto car to suit my long commute...

Since that post, my current diesel has shat itself (again) and I'm wondering if I should abandon diesels all together and go petrol.

Could I get anywhere near good economy, say 40+, out of a decent sized petrol car that's comfortable to drive for up to an hour and a half regularly?

I added up what I've spent in the last 2 years on clutch DMF, injectors and egr fault and it would buy a lot of fuel! I know I do the miles to make diesel make sense, but does it really make sense?

Bonus points for stylish and automatic with cruise control.

Forgot to add, budget is 5k but bonus points for less, preferably 3.5-4.

You'll see an easy 45mpg on a run without a map (with a map you'll see high 40's to low 50's) they eat miles with ease & are simple to maintain.
