Opinions on Honda Civic 2001 and 2006 models?

Are the 01-06 and 06-11 year Civics good cars as a solid second hand buy? How do they compare to equivalent Focus, Corolla, even Mazda 3? I like the Civic's sporty look and that is why I'm not looking into conservative style alts like the Almera.

2 completely different cars..
The early 00s model is long in the tooth now, but are pretty bulletproof... parts are pricey though.
The mid-late 00s model suffers from more issues due to it being much more modern, but is very good car.
Mazda 3's of the same generation are good, but sufger from rust issues.
Focus is very hit and miss... all depends on how its been treated..
Toyota corolla/auris is probably the best of the list you gave, insanely reliable, if a little bland.. (although they're all bland to be fair)
All depends what exactly you want... of it's looks, then try alfa romeo... reliability, Toyota... cheap and jack of all trades... focus

Try Google, then at the top change the language to Japanese. It is a different page without the US stuff. Use Google translate to put it into English. This may or may not help, but it's hugely entertaining.
Or look at the reviews on Auto trader, Parkers, etc.
The Mk7 changed the front wishbone suspension for macstrut, and the mk 8 changed the IRS for torsion beam. The mk 6 was the best civic but they're now rare appreciating classics. At the end of the day though, the worst civic is still better than the best golf.
I had a 01 civic and found the seating position v. high, the steering numb and didn't like the gearstick.YMMV. It is tardisly spacious tho.
Am looking at getting a mk 8 as some people say these handle better.
87-99 are the best tho.

Honestly it's reliability while still having something that isn't bland. I agree Corolla is a little bland to me while 01 Civic is slightly nicer. An Alfa is a definite no for me. I do wish that there was a (01) Civic Type-R style model but without the performance, keeping running costs low. I have seen reviews for them but I wanted more about how they compare between each other. Mk6 is best? They are still among the most common 90s cars I spot nowadays.Or look at the reviews on Auto trader, Parkers, etc.

I've owned both generations of Civic you refer to. I had an 02 1.6 petrol Civic for 7 years and currently have a 06 2.2 diesel on 185k that is the family workhorse and takes us camping all over the country.
The mk7 would feel quite dated now and feels a lot less solid than the mk8 but i think the former is better to drive. The mk8 is also well known for having quite a crashy ride due to it's flat floor design. I'd replace it with another without a doubt though.

I had an 03 EP2 1.6 - like a type r but with half the power and a few more extras.
It was a good car, I drove it from London to Prague on a Saturday and back again on the Sunday rescuing people trapped by the volcano flight closures.
I much preferred the Mk7 to the Mk8, or indeed any model that came afterwards as I’ve been able to drive them all apart from the very latest hybrid.
Despite being a 3 door I could get adults in the back and luggage in the boot.
