So few (used) petrol estate cars £6-8K ??

I need another large estate car as need the space for moving things but quite often short distances, at least a few times a week. Annual mileage is less than 12k and its mostly moving bits and pieces between boatyards. Masses of diesels about, but I assume that short hops would cause problems with dpf etc??

Am I being overly cautious?

Basic spec is large estate car 2.0l, 80k miles or less, 2012 or newer.... Annoyingly Skoda Yeti boot is a bit short.

I live way out West so limited a fair bit by that, will go to Brum / London I guess...

Had seen the insignia and do like that one, but its a good 10hrs on a train so I would have to be 100% that its good.

I have a Mazda now and must say the drivers seat is a weak point which puts me off them.

If possible would be easier to get a flight to Luton Airport

Have driven an insignia and to be fair to it I was happy with it, it does what it says on the tin. Comfy seats, and didn’t feel that cheap, you do get a lot of the car for your money. Definitely a comfy cruiser, very vague and wallowy but in a good way. Never been in a Mazda6.

Maybe not a 2.0T though they are pretty rare and most opted for either the 1.8i or the diesel (mostly the diesel)

Alternatively what about a 4x4/SUV. Considering you are already looking at boring Vauxhalls might as well get one, hardly worse and a lot more to pick from?

As a car these are all pretty dreary, but as a utility they are definitely better value for money than the estates in your price range. Not to mention none of the estates suggested are interesting anyway. You get a lot more space and kit for your cash


The Subaru Forester is out of this list my pick, if big enough for your needs. It really is a go anywhere vehicle. Second is the Honda CRV because you get the most kit and it has a useful big square boot. I had a CRV both times when visiting Canada; found them pleasant to drive and comfortable.

Thanks, the CRV looks ok and is'nt that far, the Forrester is 12hrs in a train away! My location (Falmouth) is mostly the limiting factor for stock!

Like the look of the Mondeo 160 - that seems a decent car.

I had a ride in one today and was surprised how small it felt inside compared to my current Mazda 5, I often stack a couple of surfboards inside when I cant be bothered to use the rack, I'm now really appreciating how versatile my current car is!!

I live in London and have had to travel to Blackburn, Southampton and Leigh-on-Sea to buy three £1,300-£8,500 petrol estates in the last year. If you’re picky - like me - you have to travel, wherever you live!
