Right, we have a Volvo xc70 2013(boring) but we need something newer.
Requirements are:
Reliable
Brill rear space x 2 lanky youths to ferry about and a hound
Has to have some off road capability. Read fields and tracks rather than hard core off road
Big boot for hol stuff. Yes we have a roof box
Discrete
<40k
Thoughts are a v90 cross country or new xc90 but would welcome thoughts

To be honest, I think you've already nailed it. I've watched a few reviews of the V90 CC and car journalists generally seem very impressed with its off-road capability.
