Replacement for Infiniti QX70 - £10k

My Mrs wants to replace her Infiniti QX70 as parts are a nightmare to get hold of and it's expensive to tax.

Her requirements are up to £10k, newer than the Infiniti so 2014 onwards, and less than 80k if possible. She prefers a high driving position but it's not essential.

Last night she started looking at the 500X, which I personally can't stand, and we will go and test drive one, but open to other suggestions. I've suggested a Countryman Cooper S but we had a Countryman that needed a replacement clutch so that's left a bit of a bad taste her mouth.

What else should we be considering?

The Jeep Renegade is built on the same platform as the 500x, might not be as reliable as your Infiniti and the Jeep has the aero dynamics of a house brick.

I spent a bit of time on a very similar scenario earlier this year and ended up getting the Mrs an Infiniti! Admittedly I hadn't quite considered the tax bracket the thing would be in. Only had to replace brake pads so far, which I did myself, so no massive bills as yet.

The other stand out option for me in terms of age and spec level was the Kadjar. Not nearly as exciting admittedly, but generally well regarded.

Do you have a petrol or diesel as there's a nigh on £300 difference (£360 vs £630) between the two.

I have family with these & none have struggled for parts, all apart from one that needed an alternator (it arrived the next day) have only needed regular servicing to date.

Jeep Renegade is a good shout by skyrocket. Their aerodynamics are not bad, they have a drag cd of 0.36, which admittedly isn't great, but it's not terrible and they look quite funky and have good petrol engines with the 1.4 turbo Fiat Multiair unit. Here's a good one

Diesel so it's £630, I wouldn't mind paying that for a Range Rover but feels expensive for this. I'd be interested to know where they got parts from, I've found it a mixed bag. I managed to get a wheel bearing with no problems but couldn't find a wishbone anywhere. I don't think I'd be in a rush to have another Infiniti.

All my family that have 3.0d QX70's pay £360 annual tax, those with FX's pay £630, parts have either come from Nissan or Parts in Motion also because Infiniti FX is the same car as the QX70 so the garage that looks after them just orders FX parts.

They do know their stuff & have worked on them from day dot maybe they have better knowledge of parts & where to get them.

That’s odd on the VED. My QX70 is a 2014 diesel and I pay £360. And if yours was registered any time between March 2006 and March 2017, so should you.

Parts are a mixed bag, but then it’s been extremely reliable so I haven’t needed them often. Engine parts are no issue because the 3.0d is the same V9X unit that’s in a lot of Nissan Navaras and top-spec Renaults. Most interior bits are Nissan or Z platform specific (the platform is the same as the 370Z sports car).

I think I had one issue where an aircon condenser had to come from Japan or the US or something but it came via the Infiniti specialist Nissan dealer so they were able to get a rush on it, up to a point.

I don't agree with the VED bit, mine is definitely £585 annually and everything I've checked says the same. Have you got a link to the contrary?

Yes but they are later.

Mine isn't a QX70, it's an FX30 (I know they're basically the same car) and as far as I know the FX30 is £585.

My wife has a 2015 500X auto, bought a year or so ago. Wouldn't have been my first choice but needed to be auto, higher drive position preferred. Wasn't too many options around.

It's been reliable, the auto box is fine. It's the 2.0d 140bhp engine so performance is adequate. Economy nothing special, marginally better than my Focus ST of similar age. It also sneaks into euro 6 which is handy. Boot space is not great and space for passengers in the back is so-so, though there isnt much of a transmission tunnel. It's also 4x4 for what it's worth.

500X is certainly well in your budget, I wouldn't rule it out, but there may be better choices.

I'm a bit late with the suggestions, how about a Kia Soul? There are good few on Autotrader. Raised ride, lots of kit and you can get a fairly new model.

They probably only questioned you because you stated you had a QX70 which as you've seen is cheaper to tax.
