Used 4x4 under £5k
Discussion
First time on this forum .hope you can help
I was looking at a Dacia Duster 1.5Dci as a general workhorse for our dogs, , and my wife and I.
I can get one for under £5k with under 100k miles
The general reviews I have had are good but couple of quick questions
- Will diesel be around for at least 5 years and not rocket up in price too much ( please get out your crystal ball ).
- Is the 1.5dci a good engine and is the duster ok ?
- Would any recommend another 4x4 that has good mpg, low tax and reliable for under £5 k
Hope that isn't too much to ask as my first question !

I like the idea of a Duster as well, any reason not to consider the 1.6 petrol? What is the hangup on the 100k mileage? Surely a well maintained car with 125k on it is going to be better than a poorly maintained car with 90k on it.
Lanoguard is an easy DIY treatment to spray underneath to prevent rust if it is a problem.

I keep toying with a Panda Cross for bike/dog transportation. They do have a price hike over regular 4x4 Panda though. A few around £5k for non-Cross. Seem to be very good and cheap to run.

I was going to consider the petrol but the tax is a lot higher and mpg a lot lower... but willing to be persuaded !Lanoguard is an easy DIY treatment to spray underneath to prevent rust if it is a problem.

Slightly oddball I guess, but by all accounts extremely reliable and capable.
Permanent 4 wheel drive, only problem being VED is £330...but it fits most of the criteria.

If it helps, I've got a 1.5dci that's approaching 230k miles. Still doing 60mpg.
thanks.. what year duster is it ?This engine is shared between many Nissans and Renaults so is well proven, but, is generally in Euro 5 tune, drops injectors for fun, and the belt swap sensibly needs a water pump too. Which if you’re not doing yourself, can be pricey…

A few years back I had a jeep patriot, vw golf gti seats and vag 2.0tdi engine, great car. Later ones have merc 2.2 diesel engine.I was looking at a Dacia Duster 1.5Dci as a general workhorse for our dogs, , and my wife and I.

Very cheap now. Lot better than a Dacia - we popped to look but they age in dog years.

Interesting, borrowed a Patriot for a short while a few years ago, thought it was a dreadful thing. Would much prefer a Duster.jl2488175 said:

Diesel will still be about, could be expensive though. I'd only bother with diesel if you are doing more than 12,000 miles a year as a minimum. There's also the issue of clean air zones, so if you live anywhere near a large city, I'd avoid a Euro 5 diesel. Spend more money to get one that's Euro 6 compliant, or go with a petrol.
The 1.5 dCi engine is a very reliable diesel engine. Just the usual diesel things to watch out for with them really, like DPFs, EGRs, avoiding short journeys and performing regular oil changes.
Some other possible ideas that match the Duster on paper
Suzuki SX4 DDiS 4Grip

Vauxhall Mokka 1.7 CDTi 4WD

Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.4 D-4D 4WD

The Fiat JTD engine used in the Suzuki is great and should be good for 300k, same goes for the A17DTS engine in the Mokka. The ND engine used in the Toyota should be good for 200k. These mileages are achievable providing you follow basic maintenance, i.e. annual oil changes or every 12k/15k/10k for each of these engine respectively, whichever comes first; timing belts on the Suzuki and Mokka every 4/5 years or 60k/100k (Toyota uses a chain), whichever comes first; and using them as intended - avoid short journeys, etc.

Thanks.. that does put the cat among the pigeons !.. We will only do about 8k miles a year max in it. The reason I was looking at the diesel was the torque , low tax, higher mpg and higher mileage possibilities. The 1.5 dCi engine is a very reliable diesel engine. Honestly I would prefer a petrol..so maybe I should change my mind
The 2.4 petrol jeep petrol would save me about £3k in purchase costs too...?
