Best fuel option for me - opinions please

Hi all. Setting the financial turmoil to one side for a moment, I’m thinking about options for next car.
At this stage I’m undecided / prepared to entertain EITHER old (10 years+), recent, or new. Man maths will be employed.
However what I can’t square the circle on is the best fuel choice for me. Life looks like this:
3-4 days per week: 3 mile round trip to station. Fast country roads but takes minutes.
2- 3 days per week: 20 mile round trip to office with no charging facility or anything like that. B roads all the way, some I’ll get up to NSL but probably only for a couple of minutes, the rest is 20-40 bracket.
There are basically NO exceptions to this pattern. No “oh it goes out for a 60 mile round trip blast once every so often” I’m not sharing.
Is that enough of a “run” to justify diesel? Or at least, not destroy the thing? Appreciate old car vs new car may come in to this.
Off street parking available at home, no charger of any sort installed. Would consider PHEV but would need to be educated.

5000 miles a year. Not enough to justify diesel on economics grounds would have thought. Buy the car you like. Petrol or diesel.
Especially if going for the 10 yr old option. Condition more than fuel choice.

To those who have asked about budget - haven’t really got one. Not really the point. If it’s a £4k car or a £40k one, I don’t want to create DPF bills etc for myself by making the wrong choice now. And undecided, as mentioned man maths can accommodate a broad range of choices.
Appreciate ‘buy on condition’, but in terms of “buy the car you like” I just want to make sure I’m not willingly choosing something I will run poorly and regret.
No mention of hybrids thus far either?
Assuming you run your own business (given your user name), then an EV every time run though the business.
£40k would give you a great choice of cars, all of which could manage your daily mileage without any bother and only using a 3amp plug to charge. Personally I'd install a charger, as that can be expensed through the business too.

+1Doesn't sound like you're going to really have any chance to enjoy driving this car, so you may as well go electric and have that nice relaxing smoothness and quiet, and save some money on running costs. Getting a charger put in would almost certainly be a worthwhile investment.
That sort of use just doesn't justify a diesel. I don't think the DPF would regenerate and a 10 year old diesel won't be Euro VI, so going into the ULEZ would cost £12.50 a day (if that might ever happen).
I only do that sort of annual mileage and run a 17 year old petrol that is Euro IV so can go into the ULEZ without being charged, which works for me as next year my sister will live in the expanded ULEZ.
Don't know about PHEV or EV options though.
