Seriously considering buying the Leon but i don't know much about them. I assume it's just the golf gti engine and i don't expect great fuel economy but realistically how bad can i expect? Compared to a 2.0tdi for example will i find the fuel bills ruinous based on about 14,000 miles a year? Any other info anyone can give will be appreciated, positive or negative.
I believe it is the EA888 engine but just with 190ps rather than the Golf GTI 220-245ps. I had a DSG Golf GTI years ago and could see 40mpg if being careful. I assume the 190 version would see into low to mid 40s but would of course depend on how you drive it. If you look up EA888 common issues there are some but I think it's generally regarded as a reliable enough engine.

However £17K would get you into a full Cupra which doesn’t have any downsides.

We have one, a 2019 hatch. Bought it three years ago (and for a little less than the estate you linked too is up for now!).
It's been great, absolutely nothing has gone wrong and it's not it needed any warranty work or recalls. Only downsides are very light steering with not a huge amount of feel and a slightly brittle ride (but it has Dynamic Chassis Control anyway with a Comfort setting). It needed a pair of front tyres, original spec Potenzas are less than £100.
Fuel economy is reasonable, we've seen 50mpg on longer runs, overall average is about 34mpg but that's with a fair amount of city driving.
It's well equipped, heated leather seats, digital dash, LED headlights etc. It's reasonably quick too and I like the fact that that engine tune wasn't available in the Golf or A3 (you can get it an Octavia though).

The car will initially feel a bit lazy in "normal" mode as it's likely tuned for economy. While in D, just toggle the gear lever back and it'll drop it into Sport. Much more lively!

It was a fine car. Had some issues with the wiring grommets in the boot lid (fixed under warranty) but they let a significant amount of water into the cabin. I’m told it’s a common fault on this platform so check those are tight before you buy. Also might not be a problem with the ST.
