Hi folks,
My current GTD lease is due to end in 2 months so I'm on the lookout for a new daily. Budget is 20k (willing to stretch to 22k), preferably auto, 2016 onwards, <60k miles, 40+ mpg on the motorway and something reasonably quick. I'm currently working from home but that's likely to change in a few months. It’s not ideal knowing the exact mileage but I can't see it exceeding 15k p/a.
I’m going to start browsing this weekend and so far my shortlist is:
M140i - My fav on paper, just put off by everything said about the handling. I won’t be tracking or anything - are they ok stock and safe enough for the occasional blast down a B road?
S3 - Likely be a pre-FL for my budget, so a bit dated inside. That said I do think i’d prefer 4wd. Really wish these were cheaper!
GTI - I’ve had a mk6 before and loved it. I’ve seen a AUC ED35 going for £16k but feel thats crazy money given the age. Mk7 is an option but I’ve had 2 Golfs now and kinda think life is too short to have another. They’re just brilliant all round cars though!
Leon Cupra - I’ve sat in one these before and never really liked the interior. It’s very dull but I guess most cars are nowadays. Also read of bad wheel hop - that was present in my old GTI and really annoyed me. 300 bhp through the front wheels seems like traction hell to me ?
330/35d (or 4 series equiv) - Probably the most sensible and best all round choice? I hate the diesel rattle from my GTD, but have read BMW 6 cyl dervs are pretty sweet (?)
Guila Veloce - I really do like the look of these! Not another generic german and seem to have character. Wish they’d come with better headlights (25w xenons pale compared to the dual LEDs i’m used to in the golf), but it’s a minor point. Just irks me though.
Fiesta ST mk8 - A wildcard and an anomaly given they’re not an auto, but I’ve always had a soft spot for them. It’ll be much cheaper than the rest and allow for some modding, but perhaps a little tiring to do 15k p/a (potentially)?

For me it would be either the GTI or M140i out of those.
You've had a few Golfs so why not try the Beemer?
It will only be an dangerous on B roads as the person behind the wheel
It'll be a nicer place then most of the others for the commute and quick enough when you want it to be.

There isn’t a bad car in that list to be honest.
As above is say M140i/240i or else Cupra/GTI be my first picks.
The M140i is fine down a B road but you’ll notice you can most likely hassle your GTD down it quicker. I prefer the 240i as just think the 1 series looks a bit funky. Great engine, nice to seat in and very competent cruiser. Think more mini GT or muscle car rather than fun.
Audi S3 is just nice. Potentially worth looking at a Golf R might be a bit cheaper?
Cupra isn’t great off the line but no FWD car is. Once in the move it’s rapid and is a great steer. Very good spec as well standard. I really rate them and can get them significantly under your budget.
GTI is faultless but it’s not cheap especially compared to the Cupra. You know what your getting with it but then life’s short and might want to sample something different.
BMW 330/335d are brilliant cruisers. Engine is brilliant and a massive step up over the GTD in refinement and performance but not as economical. Not the greatest drive on the list but I think they are brilliant.
Guila is easily the best looking. Evo rates them really high.

Possible other considerations Megane RS, A45 or an Audi S4 or S5?

My three comments would be
1) m140i is a great place to be provided you understand the nuances of the handling. It doesn’t handle badly, you just need to know the limitations. It is a good car.
2) the Audi S3 (I had a 2016 facelift, so I can’t comment on the pre FL) and it was a solid car. Quattro is brilliant, as you’d expect, and I never once felt like I was losing grip, even in snow and wet conditions. This felt faster and more stable than the 140.
3) I did like the Giulia. It was “good” all round. Drive nicely, handled well and the engine had decent poke. Aside from the 330/335, this is the best choice if you’re a motorway regular. I’d say that if you want something a bit different, this is your choice.
These would be my top 3 contenders.

I think I'm ruling out the ST now. It will be great in my current circumstance but I just know I’ll regret if I start doing miles in a few months.
Also ruling out a mk7/7.5 GTI and ED35. I really liked the the latter - looks a terrific example, fully loaded, £4k to spare and a 2yr approved warranty to boot. But I almost never touched 40 mpg in my vanilla mk6; I think the old lump tuned to 235 ps has no hope either.
The 240i is getting a lot of love so I'll give that a look. I've read they're better handing wise than the 140i? The only thing I hate about Beemers is the obscene about of options. Things like heated seats, electric mirrors, privacy glass, reversing cam are all standard on my GTD, yet are options on both the 1 and 2 series. Heck, it seems they don't even come with CarPlay or even cruise control!? I've read the former can be coded in providing you have the pro nav, but annoying nonetheless. Still, it's not enough to put me off and the main reason why I'm willing to stretch my budget for the right car (I'll be keeping it for at least 4 years!).

There’s a few FL’s too but without the tech pack and have been visually modified (not ideal). I’ve considered the Golf R, but the somewhat “chavvy” image puts me off. Granted, S3’s and M140i’s aren’t much better in that regard but I feel the R is the biggest offender. They’re also common with thieves?
Jag XE S. Some very nice examples there ZX, thanks. I absolutely love that supercharged sound, just put off by general JLR reliability? Other options seem to fit my age group a little better too (I’m 30!), though that does sound a little dumb I know
I’ll definitely give it a consideration.
Cupra fits the bill on paper but I’m feeling other options more. And I’m also inclined to favour the Guila over a 330/35d. They’re genuine head turners and I also like the layout inside from the pictures.
There’s a car supermarket near me that has all the cars bar the XE, so I’ll have a look this weekend (pending the weather!). The 40i’s and Guila are my favourites so far.

How are you getting on with your search jam_up?
I am 6 months away from the end of a 3 year lease on a Cupra 290 (which followed 2 years in a Cupra 300) and I have an almost identical shortlist of replacements so keen to know your thoughts as you look into it more. Although I am hoping to stretch my budget up to £25k which brings in a few more interesting things such as an M4 or Mustang. I also have an i30n, 340i and 440i on my shortlist.
My thoughts on your list below:
M140i - Don't discount them just based on handling. A Bilstein B12 kit can be had for less than £800 and is supposed to make a huge difference, check out the YT videos. This would be my plan if I go down this route. My concern with the M140i is the lack of android auto integration without an MMI box which don't seem hugely reliable. Other than that, it's a strong contender for me.
S3 - This is also a strong contender for me, although in saloon form. Agree that your budget is on the fence of pre/post FL, although prices do seem to be falling so fingers crossed they come into play for you. If I go this route though, it justifies something RWD like an MX5 for a weekend toy (man maths at work here!!).
GTi / Leon Cupra - I've grouped these together as it sounds like you don't want another Golf. I'd seriously consider getting a test drive in a Cupra, I may be bias but it's handling is superb and I think it's understated vs the other EA888 option. Can't deny that they do suffer from wheel hop but like anything, you learn to know how to drive it to exploit the best from it. I'll be gutted when I have to hand mine back but after 5 years in them, I fancy a change (hence why I'm also considering a Golf GTi PP).
330/35d - I don't understand the diesel consideration, given the rest of the list. 15k pa isn't huge mileage so unless you are mainly on motorways, I'd be considering a 330i instead.

The standard wheels also look awful so would want QV wheels and styling bits to make it look more interesting, like the newer Veloce Ti models. Think a test drive would make me like these more as heard that they handle and go well.

Cupra fits the bill on paper but I’m feeling other options more. And I’m also inclined to favour the Guila over a 330/35d. They’re genuine head turners and I also like the layout inside from the pictures.
There’s a car supermarket near me that has all the cars bar the XE, so I’ll have a look this weekend (pending the weather!). The 40i’s and Guila are my favourites so far.

I own a 240i and have done for a little over 2 years now, I love the car and I have no issue with handling, I don't know if its different to the 140i in that respect because I always hear the same posts about the handling but I have never experienced them myself, sure my Boxster is sharper but I would expect it to be. I think I'm ruling out the ST now. It will be great in my current circumstance but I just know I’ll regret if I start doing miles in a few months.
Also ruling out a mk7/7.5 GTI and ED35. I really liked the the latter - looks a terrific example, fully loaded, £4k to spare and a 2yr approved warranty to boot. But I almost never touched 40 mpg in my vanilla mk6; I think the old lump tuned to 235 ps has no hope either.
The 240i is getting a lot of love so I'll give that a look. I've read they're better handing wise than the 140i? The only thing I hate about Beemers is the obscene about of options. Things like heated seats, electric mirrors, privacy glass, reversing cam are all standard on my GTD, yet are options on both the 1 and 2 series. Heck, it seems they don't even come with CarPlay or even cruise control!? I've read the former can be coded in providing you have the pro nav, but annoying nonetheless. Still, it's not enough to put me off and the main reason why I'm willing to stretch my budget for the right car (I'll be keeping it for at least 4 years!).
There's a few pre-FL S3's advertised locally with some nice options like a pan roof for £20k, but it's a lot of money for a 6-7 year old car. Mine is pretty much base spec, although does have the electric folding mirrors, the only things I would add to mine given the choice are cruise control and heated seats. When I come to change it, probably in 18 months they will be must haves for me.
I had two Giulia Veloces (now in a F31 330d). The Giulia is slightly smaller than a 3 series and has a relatively small boot and slightly cramped rear sets. In my opinion the Giulia is a much better car to drive than a 3 series, better suspension and steering.
The 67 plate models linked to do not have car play but I felt my 67 plate was better than the 69 plate I had. The 67 was on staggered 18'' turbines (I'd avoid the bigger QF wheels) and seemed to turn in better (more negative camber?). The engine seemed 'free-er' as I think the 69 model has more particulate filtering on the exhaust. The 69 plate also had some sort of fake engine noise thing.
The Veloce has all the stuff as standard that are options on a BMW (heated electric front seats, heated steering wheel, electric folding mirrors, lumbar support, folding rear seats, lane warning etc). The only options worth bothering about would be the upgraded headlights, rear ventilation pack, and leather dash). The cars linked to may be ex-lease as my 67 plate was only £300 pm at 10k miles pa with 3 months down! I averaged about 30 mpg with 40 possible on the m-way.
The Giulia feels much lighter on its feet with very quick steering compared with a 3 series (I've driven various 3 series). I prefer the 330d on the motorway as it is more bargelike but I've never felt the need to just go for a drive down some back roads in the BMW in comparison with the Giulia. Performance is good (I think it needs another 30 bhp). The gearbox and engine mapping on the Alfa is better than the BMW efforts. I think Alfa nailed it with the ZF8 here.
The only niggles I have are the fact that you can't switch off the TC, that the drivers seat moves back automatically when you open the door, and the loud beeping when you unlock the car.
No problems with the two I had over 5 years. Servicing is every 9k miles. Not sure when the big service is due (belts etc).

M240i - Ruling this out now due to practicality vs the M140i. It's not a consideration I initially had, but I occasionally have passengers so I'll be pretty bummed if space causes issues.
S3 - I saw a pre-FL saloon in sepang blue and it looked great. The dated cabin didn't bother me either, but pricing did! They're around a years older than equivalent M140i's for the same price.
GTI/Cupra - I've yet to see any Cupra's. I did see some GTI PP's with the optional 19" Brescia's and they looked lovely. If I hadn't had 2 Golf's already then it this would be a no brainer for me. The mk7.5 is so much nicer than the mk8.
330/35d - I didn't like the F30 interior at all. Granted, it's similar to the M140i but those analog dials look SO old, especially coming from a digital cockpit. A 340i might change my mind but I've decided to avoid diesels now. Life is too short to have another, irrespective if it's a 6 cylinder or not.
Guilia Veloce - Absolutely gorgeous! No doubt this was the best looking car inside and out!! I'm not a fan of the stock 'turbine' alloys either, but the one I saw had the optional 5 spoke in grey which looked a lot better. No CarPlay or the poorer xenon lights less of an issue now as all other standard equipment is very good. However they don't appear to sound particularly great. I've not heard one in person yet but they seem very muted from all the YT clips I've seen. That could be the decisive factor for me because everything else is bang on - it's a cut above the M140i in every regard apart from the engine/sound.
ST - I ruled this out last week but I still had a sit in and was pleasantly surprised how much nicer it was than a mk7. Incidentally, I also sat in a i30n and I'd actually rate the ST better for plastics - things like the door handle/rest felt very cheap in the i30n. They do sound bloomin’ good though and seem a riot to drive.

I’m less concerned about the handling now to be honest - I'll ease myself in to get a grip of its flaws. Cruise and heated seats are an absolute must me for too. I’m going to miss the adaptive cruise and lane assistance on my Golf but it’s something I’m willing to sacrifice. The rear seats definitely looked cramped actually, which I was surprised about relative to my Golf, but it's not enough to put me off. What did you think of the sound? Was there any difference between the 67 and 69 plates (thinking particulate filter etc)?
In summary, I've got down to three choices now: M140i, Guilia and S3. It will probably the New Year when I get a chance to test drive them.

The ST is go kart like - really does deserve it’s reputation - loved it but got tiresome quickly when I started commuting via motorway and was ready for something faster.
Drove an m140i and a close friend had one - sounds incredible but that’s ultimately it. Very much a 7/10 car (fine if that’s what you need). Tiny boot - not dissimilar to the fiesta in reality.
Had a Giulia until recently and adored it in every way, chassis is stupendous, gearbox as mentioned had a 6th sense for what you needed and always obeyed. Engine noise lacking but enough to keep it interesting. TC always on but always let you “twitch” the rear and keep you involved. Sold it in a moment of madness for…
A golf R (drawing parallels with the S3/gti here). I cant gel with it at all. It’s so dull, very much one-dimensional - point and squirt and choreographed pops. Grips but doesn’t “handle” like the Giulia - hard to explain but there’s no finesse, and despite the shorter wheelbase doesn’t feel as agile. Also it’s a golf - meh - the Alfa was properly special.
You can probably see where my allegiances lie. The golf is now up for sale and I’m looking to get back into a Giulia or upgrade to a 911.

So an update to this thread:
Put a deposit down on a 3dr m140i shadow edition today! A touch above my budget but delighted with the spec: Pro nav, heated seats, adaptive led’s, folding mirrors, rear camera and carplay prep! AUC FBSH to boot! No adaptive suspension but I found the passive setup fine. Completly stock and unmodified, so i’m absolutely delighted.
I test drove a Golf R the other week (despite not initially wanting another Golf) and was really underwhelmed. Obviously rapid, point and shoot weapon. But it just didn’t feel special to me, which was something that surprised me given the power. That ruled out the S3 too.
Drove the m140i and was put aback by that B58. What a monster lol. But also an effortless and surprisingly quiet cruiser in comfort. It’s narrower inside but I actually prefer the seat and leg position being over 6ft. The one i’m picking up has almost new super sports all around + 3dr so it has the under-brace fitted, so I’m think it will be good enough for me as stock. Can’t wait to pick it up next week!
