Newer a4 to older a8

I have a manual 2017 2.0tdi A4. I do 17-20k miles a year. It's the s line, so a little crashy on small roads, but comfy on motorways, where most of my miles are done. It's just clicked over 100k miles.

I've been looking at a 3 litre A8. 2012 with 125k miles on. I'd get about £1500 back if I swapped, which I'd use to do a gearbox service and them just put the rest aside and await for the inevitable.!

I'm aware my running costs would be more (fuel, tyres, parts) but im thinking not significantly more? Even though my wife thinks it's a downgrade (numberplate!) I know I'd appreciate the smoother and more powerful auto drive train and comfort.

Do you think the swap would be worth it? Or would a 10 year old a8 just be hassle and cost?

How long is a piece of string? At that age and mileage, I would see if the A8 is due a suspension refresh as that's what gets knackered at 10 years or older with big heavy luxury cars, even if the engine and box are fine.

I'm sure an A8 would be a much nicer place to rack up 17/20K miles a year mostly on Motorways, but I'm pretty sure it would come at a price.

I'd probably go for the A8 if I had a bork fund - YOLO!

Honestly I think it's a terrible idea. The 3.0 V6 TDI engines found in the 2012 vintage Audi A8 were plagued with reliability problems, chiefly timing chain failure that would destroy the engine and fuel injector failure that would lead to burnt pistons.

There's good news though, after 2013 they ironed out these faults, so go for a 2014 or newer model to make sure you get one of the good ones, like this

Ulez too if a factor, the headlights (and rear lights) are the giveaway on the facelift which was euro6, get one of them, and waft in serenity.

On one of the which way will prices go threads there was one singular example of a good spread to dealer prices for them, so I'd think 15-17k would get you in a lowish mile new one, pay a bit more and there are some very low mile nice ones. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2022112820... will fall as it fails to sell, it not being the cooking Astra muppets generally buy from Cazoo, and I've seen them drop a grand every few weeks until they get a bite. They had one at about 18 recently (well maybe September) with similar miles, it having dropped from a similar starting point.
