Covering short term gap between leases

My BiL is going to have a gap of approx 3 months between lease cars although this gap is subject to change and could quickly reduce to 2 months if the new car arrives early.
He needs a temp car for this gap on flexible terms should he need to return it early and it needs to accommodate his monthly mileage of about 2.5k miles. His current lease is an X5 and it’s being replaced by a FF RR, the cover needs to be of a similar ilk.
Is rental the only realistic option?

Is the new car through the same leasing company ?
If so might be easiest just to ask them if he could extend.
If not same company still worth asking I would have thought.

I'd just ask for a three month extension & go from there.
