Multi car insurance
Discussion
Aviva and Admiral used to be popular for it, especially for a few cars. It was limited to the one household and changes could only be made by the "policy owner", usually the husband/dad. Source - I used to sell car insurance for Aviva over a decade ago.
With Aviva you could get a full years NCD if a car was added with more than 6 months remaining on the policy. The policy inception date (usually the renewal date for the first insured car) became the renewal date for all cars added at a later date.
Example:
- insure Car A with 5 years NCD on a new policy from 1 Jan
- add Car B with nil NCD before the end of June (month 6)
- on 1 Jan next year Car A has 6 years NCD, and Car B has 1 years NCD (assuming no incidents)
With Admiral the same would apply as long as Car B was added before the end of September (month 9). The Multicar policies were popular with parents of new drivers even if the quotes weren't the cheapest. We could discount a small amount ourselves to price match or even beat other quotes, but could discount further if authorised by Underwriting.
If you were insuring a second car with the same drivers the NCD could be mirrored for the first two policy years, then a full NCD discount would be granted. In the example above, both cars would have 7 years NCD at the second renewal date. This was only allowed if there were no young drivers, and was limited to insured only, or insured + domestic partner (spouse, gf etc).
Things might have changed now, but that's how it used to be. I've insured with brokers who will mirror discounts too, but I think it varies depending on insurer/underwriter.

I’d recommend AXA. I have two cars insured with them and have worked my way through five family cars on my second policy over the last 18 months.
They mirror no claims discount, their prices for the first car are very good and prices for the second policy are OK (would be better, but insurers generally charge you more for cars you’ve just bought compared with brand new ones) and their online system is very usable, letting you get quotes for changing cars easily and there’s no cost for switching insurance from one car to a new online.
Not perfect, but pretty good overall…

Admiral used to be the so called multi car insurer for mainstream vehicles and then Direct line joined in.
Various companies already named here have always quoted for multi vehicles ( group / personal fleet etc ) along with the various HNW companies such as Hiscox , Chubb and Zurich etc.
Any decent Motor Broker can be worth a call to see what options are available and it won’t cost you anything.
I use Nowell and Richards but others available.

We were (335d, me, and Skoda Fabia, wife, both also named driver for the other’s car)
A) With NFU as a multi-car for a few years, then the prices hiked quite a lot, so we went to:-
B) Last year we were with LV= as individual policies, reasonable prices, and cheaper than A’s new quote.
C) LV= hiked the prices on top the individual policies, so:
D) we now have LV= multi-car policy, much cheaper than C, but the exactly the same cover !
It really is a case of hunting around for the best deal - crazy system.

My girlfriend has her car on a multicar policy even though her car is kept at a different address to the main policy holder (her parents), I didn't think that sounded right but she is adamant it is correct. She seems to be insistent it's cheaper all round as well but I prefer to just stick to insuring my own cars separately.
Admiral worked very well for me in the last few years. At my last renewal, I could have got two of the cars insured very slightly cheaper elsewhere - but they were much cheaper for my main car, plus had other advantages (not requiring Tracker etc). And when I called them and said I would move the other cars, they dropped their price anyway.
I've been very happy with them - including the payout on a significant total loss claim.

Thanks all for your informative replies. I tried Aviva and Admiral and their websites gave errors and couldn’t go through to save quotes. Will give NFU and AXA a go.
But I do get it that I am trying to swim against the tide here. Will try and go back to two separate policies otherwise. 😊

Had to go with 2 single quotes in the end. Completely random process ! Ended up using Uswitch.com and went ahead with one of top 3 quotes in both cases.
AXA were expensive and NFU has no online quote system (didn’t have the patience or time to call).
Interesting. Did you find Uswitch better than Moneysupermarket and Confused?AXA were expensive and NFU has no online quote system (didn’t have the patience or time to call).
I've been with admiral multi car for sure a few years now and they've been quite flexible and good to negotiate with vibe renewal time. The previous renewal was not as accommodating and the one i have just done even less so.
So I just have 3 cars with them now down from 5. Next year I will take it in hand and get competetive quotes as it now looks expensive for the three cars. £1050 for a VW Touareg, Renault Zoe and Skoda fabia For interest, with the 5 cars insured they were at 3 different addresses albeit with 4 drivers in the same family.
