Replacement Family Car

Current family car is a 2013 Qashqai+2 but it's getting a wee bit long in the tooth and looking to replace it
Current front runner is a BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer XDrive around a 2018 plate

Two Car Seats required although oldest will be due for a booster seat soon
Only require the additional "box seats" once in a blue moon

Any other choices in the 7 seater / 4WD / Diesel / SUV stakes?
Mileage up to 45K

Budget is around £15/18K

Up to what mileage are you willing to accept? That sort of money will get a Skoda Kodiaq or Seat Tarraco if you don't mind 60+K

Alternatively, you're around the price of a brand new Dacia Jogger. I think they actually look pretty good and reviews seem generally positive.

If you need to use regularly 2 or 3 car seats plus another in the back then your life will be easier with a car with 3 individual seats. At that price a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso is the most bang for buck. I was looking at 2 series GC and Tourans and as you'd expect there is a decent premium on them.

See if you can get 2 car seats next to each other then if you need the flexibility of access to the rear row or a third person in the back. If you cant then you will be stuck removing a seat every time you want to get somebody in the third row or squashed in the middle. Generally,if you can't fit 2 seats next to each other then even if you for them one each side the middle seat will either be inaccessible or unusable anyway. That means no grandparents in the car, no child friends etc. For those flexibility reasons I went for a C4 Grand Picasso.

Thanks for all the helpful replies, have discounted the Hyundai as the missus will see it as a van
The Seat Tarraco looked the best of the bunch but given there's not many 2018's in Auto/4WD it's over budget

Will prob stick to the BMW and buy one in March when the new registrations come out
Incidentally got a quote from Autotrader part ex guarantee price was pleasantly surprised at the valuation (a few £k over WBAC)

What about a Nissan X-Trail? There is a 7 seater version as I was looking at them recently when researching 7 seat SUV's. £15-18K should get a decent one.

I went with a Santa Fe recently, not sure what milage you’ll get upto £18K, but I spent £12k and bought with 70K miles.

Yep that replaced the Quasqai+2 model we currently own
It's been a great car but wouldn't feel like an upgrade especially the cabin which hasn't changed much over the years

The main issue I have when comparing the competition to the BMW Grand Tourer is the competition is around £1-2k more expensive than the BMW for similar mileage (which surprises me)

The BMW cabin also seems to be the best laid out of the lot (I confess to being biased as I have a M135i as my daily)

The driver cabin, controls, software etc are better than many of the other cheaper alternatives. The 2 series GC though isn't an SUV and many of the other 7 seat options are SUV. I found the 2GC is similarly priced to a Touran.

Yeah that's true, tbh other than 2 or 3 short trips per year ferrying some relatives at funerals/christenings or when I miss the last train home, we only use 4 seats so a "faux" SUV suits us

It's horses for courses and different priorities result in a different car choice of course. I ended up with a C4 Grand Picasso because I wanted to be able to get 7 in the car for day trip or UK holidays. I wanted to get 3 baby/car seats in a row and 2 next to each other and still have an outside seat useable and foldable to access the rear without having to remove a seat. My kids are both under 3 and I use belted and tethered seats so while I'm quick at refitting I don't want to take a seat out to have to access the rear most seats. The individually sliding seats also give you a lot of flexibility.

We had one as the family wagon from new (ex Demo) on a 65 plate till we chopped it in April 21.

220d Luxury - 2 wheel drive - had a few extras but I can only remember the tow bar, which I used once...

Did approx 35k miles with no real issues, although for the month before it went it was being used for quite a few short runs so the engine management light came on once (cleared after a run).

The drive itself was good - auto gearbox was also good (came from an S-Max with the powershift box) - interior is a good place to be, and if you have an M135i then you'll be used to it straight away - my wife misses it - replaced with a V Class as we wanted more space for dogs.

I'd recommend it, but probably petrol and with the auto box.

Thanks for the feedback, tbh if it wasn't for the fact I've access to the company fuel tank then I'd be going down the petrol route
