It’s not just Toyota though. New car prices have gone through the roof over the last few years and I don’t think they’ll be coming down any time soon.

They are nice looking cars but at that price most people will end up buying the lowest engine of A Class AMG trim/1 Series M trim as they similar price with a stronger image. As most won't care about power but just looks.

I’m shocked at the price of most new cars - I certainly can’t think of many which I’d say were ‘good value’. I guess at least with, Toyota, your buying (mostly) trouble free motoring.

A bog spec corsa is £18k so weirdly not outrageous. I bought a brand new Mazda 2 for £9300 (£7300 after scrappage discount) in 2009 so can see where you’re coming from.

TBH I'm surprised how little new car prices have risen over the years.

My old alfa 145 was £16k new 26 years ago!

It's quite the opposite now. Merc, Audi, BMW are in real white goods territory.
The Toyota is by far the better car and doesn't have the stigma the German three carries with them..

Surely most of this should not be a shock with more safety and emissions requirements it has pushed the price up of small cars making them more difficult to justify than even some larger cars?

I have seen replies to other posts where people have shown that the recent rises are only in line with inflation overr the last 10 or 15 years. Trouble is, we were spoilt with cheap leases for almost a decade and all the inflation on cars has happened in the last 12 months or so.

And wages aren't keeping pace.

TBH, I’m always surprised at new car prices, but then again I’ve always bought 2nd hand, bar a couple of lease cars but they were a few years ago(2015-2017) when cheap lease deals were ripe.
As someone who has never had car finance, I’d struggle to look at the above and choose it over something like this as a daily:

But then again, there are many out there who just want a cheap-to-finance car, which I’m sure the Yaris is.

I keep thinking new car prices are expensive but then I remember I didn't even wince at paying £21,300 for a brand new Subaru Impreza Turbo back in 2000.

I now earn more than double what I did back then and no way would I spend £21K on a car now.

I then replaced that with a Renault Clio Dynamique 1.2 that cost £8800 in 2002, and 20 years later the cheapest Clio is £19K.

I'd spend £35k on a Granturismo Sport. I would not be surprised if the running costs (including depreciation) over 3 years was similar.
