EP3, Cupra R or Glanza V?
Discussion
I had a ‘53 plate Leon Cupra R (225) back in 2006, my friend had an ‘05 plate Civic Type R at the same time, so hopefully I can offer the opinion of them as they were in they day (so a good state of fitness).
The LCR was the better daily drive. It was more comfortable, quieter, softer and you felt far less ruined after a long journey in it. It was also faster in a straight line/off the line. It was also massively better braked.
The CTR was more involving to drive, was more fun on a B road, and certainly more fun on a track (though I still had fun in my LCR on track). It was notably louder at a cruising speed, and felt a whole load cheaper, but that’s exactly why it was the better steer for having fun.
Which would I want to own today? That would depend entirely on what I wanted to do with it. Daily it? The LCR. Track it? The CTR. Use it on the road but for a bit of fun, probably still the LCR as it now suits the kind of driving I tend to do, which is make a decent pace, but not want to be driving at 10 10ths.
FN53EHE, where are you now I wonder…

Maybe a simple one, but why only pre 2005?
Honestly? I just love the designs that I grew up with, 80's - 2000's, and never owned one of the above. Now I'm financially settled, and have a mortgage etc, I'd love to buy one of these legends for the weekends.Personally I've always wanted a skyline R33/ R34, subaru 22b, but the prices are extortionate. Being realistic, I'll never own one unless I'm on dividends.
As a toy I’d go for the CTR. It’d be lovely to experience one while you can. Vtec yo!
I had a 2002 Celica T sport and absolutely loved it. They make no sense in todays turbocharged world but seeing that needle soar past 8000rpm never got boring.
How about a Renaultsport Clio? I never had one unfortunately but prices seem very strong for good ones. £9k is plenty for the very best examples and you could still get one for a lot less.

I am leaning more to the type r, pretty common for parts and upgrades and the reliability of Honda in general is unbelievable. I've owned 2 previously, an Accord 1.8 vtec which was very boring with the D series engine but it was a nice work horse. I had a 2002 Celica T sport and absolutely loved it. Then I remember buying a 1.4i as a run around for £250 lol. It done 270k miles, but the engine was whisper quiet. Crazy history behind it though when I spoke to the seller.
I do like the clio sports, especially the 182 trophy, but my other half won't let me buy one just because her ex owned one.
I've looked at imprezas but anything below 10k is a waste of time. Plus the amount of ads I've seen where people have said "engines been changed" it's put me off buying one.
I've always wanted a 106 gti but I'm not paying an arm and a leg for one with high mileage. Golf's are boring, the e46 bmw is nice, but again boring to drive.
The only cars I've driven that I could say were fun, and you actually felt the road with, was the saxo vtr and the escort xr3i. That's my personal opinion out of the 40+ cars I've owned since 18.

Why is it a lot of car prices have gone insane? I seen an escort cosworth the other day going for 80k and it's like wtf!?!
I remember when you could pick up a saxo for £500 before covid and now they're between £1500 - £15,000. The world's got mental issues.
I had a premier type r when it was two years old. I like the look of them, love the recaro interior. Yes basic but I don’t like fancy stuff in performance cars. The gearbox and engine were brilliant.
But I hated the electric power steering, no feel what so ever. I put a new set of tyres on it and it improved things, apparently the geo can be tweaked for an improvement as well. It lasted less than 6 months, I nearly sold it a month after buying it and I should have really.
I also had a Clio 182 Trophy, brilliant car had it for four years and still miss it. I know prices are silly for them now though.

My mate had a Saxo Vts back in the day after a 1.9 205 Gti and I much preferred the Saxo.
I’d pick the CTR as it’s just a legendary car really if you can find a good one, there seem to be a few around though last time I looked but prices were high.
The Clio as above is a fantastic car too, I loved my 172 model but got rid as it was just a bit too small for me.

Only first hand experience is a Starlet Turbo (EP82 Quadlight). It was a mega little thing and was somewhere between 180-200bhp. It weighed next to nothing, so had a decent turn of pace. The suspension/brakes are especially archaic these days. Gearboxes are fairly weak after 200bhp from memory, but the 1.3 4EFTE is a decent little unit and makes nice power with a simple TD04 upgrade.
Depends what you want the car for, the CTR and LCR are both more capable and much more refined. Tuning potential for all 3 is massive.
In terms of residual values, I would imagine the Civic or the Glanza would be more desirable in the future if that's something you are considering.
Edit - My old EP82. 15k miles when I had it around 15yrs ago. Sadly a goner now

Two things I expect, firstly the amount still on the road will reduce over time limiting supply, then more and more people in your position (some much wealthier) wanting the cars they grew up with driving demand. I had a Cupra r 225, exactly the same platinum grey as the one above. I loved it and it was so cheap at the time for the performance it gave. Mine had a revo map and a non resonated miltek so it sounded great. It was very quick but what it really needed was upgraded suspension to handle the power, but I guess most now will have had this done. I would definitely have another but decent looked after ones are very hard to find for reasonable money now.

I am looking at an ovni yellow on ebay which looks really nice. I can't get a link direct but you can locate it on the cupra list from this link below.https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=leon+cupra+...
Just under 7k, seems to be looked after and low mileage for the age. It ticks a few boxes, one being its 5 door so I can get my daughter in and out easily. It's got power, aggressive looks, rarity but the only hold back, is would i keep it long term? Where as the type r or glanza I would.
Integra Type R worth keeping an eye on:

Leftfield
Fiat Coupe 20V LE:

RX-8 R3 although not 2005 they were designed in that period:

From your list it would be the Civic.

The problem with that teggy is the paintwork, i'd probably only pay 4k for it if i'm honest. It will need a full respray and a lot of work. The fiat looks pretty nice but I wouldn't keep it long term. Auto alex is currently respraying one on his YT channel so I can't wait to see the end result.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314340262123?hash=item4...

Would never own an RX8 for obvious reasons lol. I'd be on edge like I was when I owned a BMW 1 series, timing chain still went though!
I really like this, and would snap it up, but it's in Birmingham:

same with this:

I’ve had a cupra R ( 210), and currently have an fn2 civic.
They are quite different cars in my experience. The cupra is all about mid range, and even with just a little tweaking, you can make that mid range pretty massive for a car of that weight.
Mine made somewhere north of 300ft/lb of torque, which was interesting in a front wheel drive car.
Cornered ok, slippy diff helps in the dry, can be a bit interesting in the damp when it comes on boost.
I’ve not driven an EP3, but The fn2 has broadly the same engine. It’s a totally different thing, really doesn’t do a great deal below the 5500 VTEC crossover, at which point it goes a bit bats
t. It’s not fast as such, but you can extract performance out of it.
The sound is amazing for a 4 pot, with an intake they sound a bit like a touring car. Corner like one as well.
Bad bits about the ctr’s - if it’s your only car, motorway journeys can be a bit… tiring. A decent motorway cruise is around 4k rpm, it’s firm, and the seats are not brilliant if you are a bit on the.. larger side.
People give the fn2 a bit of a kick for the rear suspension. I’ve never driven an ep3, but the fn2 is more than capable compared to various other cars I’ve had, including the cupra.
