Porsche Cayman with £65k budget?

In discussions with the other half about getting a 3rd car we can both enjoy. I recently posted on a thread here about monthly car payments and well, it got me thinking about having a weekend car for my partner and I.

The daily is a 2022 Corsa which is on PCP, I own a MX-5 NB1/MK2 which has been getting turned into a track car since July last year. She can only drive automatic, so she has no "fun" car to drive, not that she is into cars but she defo has the boring car feeling when we go on trips at the weekend and coming up this summer we are going away for 2 weeks, lot's of driving and probably nice weather.

We have had a good look at various cars, we considered a sporty estate for space and passengers and quickly thought fk that, this car is for us not for anyone else. After a quick look at an MX-5 ND-RF I suggested we just look at a Porsche if we are going to be going the sporty route.

So, I've looked at AT for Caymans and it seems even ones hitting £65k (2020/2021) models are not exactly booming with optionals. Is a Cayman a good option at £65k? Perhaps I am just looking for a bunch of people to say yes so I can justify such a costly car, and this isn't really a question.

This would also be the first expensive car we would ever own, so a bit of fear there and it is advised to pay for a Porsche warranty as well, so that needs to be factored into the £65k.

• GR Supra - Ugly but open to test driving one if I can find one nearby
• BMW Z4 - Not interested in soft top
• Merc SLC 43
• 981 GT4 - I doubt the power jump and cost jump is going to be kind to my wallet for my partners insurance
• LC500 - Now this I really really like, not sure why
• Ferrari California - I don't think I can afford to run this

If money were no object and I had to by a Porsche the best Cayman I could find would be the choice. For that money you should be able to find a brilliant one. It depends what you mean by options I guess.

However, if I were to spend £65k on a fun car, I'd be buying an Evora.

Uh yeah less spent the better as with most things but I understand these aren't exactly daily beaters that you want to skimp on. £65k is the budget we have agreed with, can't do much more than that. A few other things I forgot to mention is also tax + years insurance (as well as the warranty), so realistically it's £60k budget by the time we drop those off the total.

Options like android auto, heated memory seats, heating steering wheel, parking assistance like cameras etc etc. A host of creature comforts since the car will most likely be used for day trips and long weekends. It seems most from what I can see have a bit of a mix. Plus my partner has only had their license for 10 months, so safety options are paramount. For example, rain sensors and auto dimming mirrors are bloody options and not factory.....

I don't understand the above, esp the 2020 Cayman 2.0 linked.

A brand new Cayman 2.0 starts at £48k. So if you want a car with specific options for £65k, surely just go on the Porsche configurator, click the desired boxes and order one? Or are they no longer actually available to order new, or > 12 months waiting list for a build slot? I know the GT3/GT4s are limited, I assumed the regular models were reasonably available?


Incidentally if I were you I'd test drive an A110 GT as well, you might decide you prefer the Porsche but it's a lovely little car and feels quite special, and of course they're all two-pedal.

At 65k you’re looking at a GT4 from the 981 Cayman line up, and as they are manual only you can put a line through that.

From the 718s, £65k will get you into a 2019 2.5l GTS. You’d need another 10k to get a newer (21) 4.0 GTS.


ETA: just seen your partner has only had a licence for 10 months. Check the insurance cost for her before you go window shopping…

So with the lighting upgrade, leather interior, heated seats, some storage options, parking assistance, autobox, it comes out to 66k (roughly). This is with everything else stock, such as single colours, base alloys, the kind of stuff that make the car easy to sell in the future lol. If I was to pop on a Porsche exclusive colour + forged alloy wheels (I assume stock aren't forged at that price) it goes way north of £70k.

Delivery for pretty much anything is sitting at a minimum of 12 months.

Like I said before, this is my first time ever considering such a vehicle and I'm not really up to scratch with these high end cars. So things such as the GT4 or 911 in my mind are in the realm of unobtainable in terms of cost but perhaps I should also look into those if you think a used one of these is realistic. Ignore, poster above said those are manual only.

Sadly even regular Caymans are not available, with quotes of up to 24months…dealers happy to sell you into a used one at a premium, whilst you wait for your ordered one. Though fewer than 10 base Cayman on Porsche site under 18 months old, so also limited due to the past few years issues. The 48k doesn’t include the 2k+ first year registration fee etc, and even a few options you’re quickly at 55k.

Have already. It's not pretty, £1,700 per year. All thing considered that's a drop in the ocean really and we can easily afford that per year, it can only come down right? lol

I’ll hopefully be in a similar position in a 3-4 years so interesting to see how people recommend doing the Porsche thing.

Just to echo I’d recommend checking your other half’s insurance cost on compare the market as it wouldn’t be a stretch to see it hitting £3K.

F.Y.I You can’t get android auto on a stock Cayman - carplay only. There are people that can code it aftermarket I believe.

Why aren't you considering a pdk 911?

65k will get you a lot of older 911 - that's older gts and turbo money.

Got an example? I mentioned in an above comment I pretty much wrote off 911 because I always associated it with being way out of reach. Cheapest I can find on AT is a £75k, £10k over my budget which is actually more like £15k over once all the other bits are taken care of (insurance, tax).

I gave up waiting after having a new Cayman on order for 14 months without allocation. Have had a 2019 PDK for 3 months that my wife uses every day. Took a couple of weeks to get used to it after driving a Aygo. Paid £46k from porsche and only extras are PDK / Sport exhaust / metallic white paint - nothing else required.
