What to replace Discovery 5 with?

Long story short, our Discovery was stolen and we're now paid out. Whilst there were many good points about it, I'm minded to try something else, what has anyone else followed a Discovery with ? We've had an XC90 loan car for a few weeks, it's ok, but my wife who is the main user doesn't like the seats, or the fact that most controls are on the touch screen. I also cannot get the heater to a comfortable setting, so despite it being exactly the right size, it's no.
Our requirements are preferably 7 seats, with the rear most for occasional use, I prefer 250 BHP plus, automatic, decent room in the rear for 3 kids (Aged 11 to 15 i.e. adult size pretty much).
I'm thinking Q7, yet to try one.
Budget up to £50k.

Sorry to hear about your car being stolen, this is one of my worries, I'm also looking to buy a 7 seat SUV (currently wrestling with myself to loosen the purse strings). Do you mind if I ask how it was stolen - did they break into the house to steal the car or was it one of these key fob radio signal extension type jobs that seems to be doing the rounds.
Other cars possibly to consider:
X5 - is bigger and noticeably different to previous model - has a nice split tailgate - though from what I've read the 3rd row is not the best
Q7 - as you've stated - one thing to note on the Q7 is the way to get into the rear seats - seems to be a 2 part process - the seats fold down then fold forwards resting against front seats - just need to watch you don't catch yourself on any sharp underpinnings of the seat
Kia Sorento - for your budget you can get brand new - whereas german marques still looking at 1-3 yr old - I found the mechanism to get into the rear seats really good and simple. Simply lift a lever and the 2nd seats spring forward giving easy access to rear seats and pretty good in the 3rd row for the kids.
GLE - as mentioned above - very nice interior
XC90 which you've ruled out, also Range Rover Sport and Defender.
How did you find the Discovery? did you find it reliable enough? - does have the best in terms of the 3rd row seating - you can seat adults in the 3rd row. Though wish they'd give it a fresh modern look like they've done with the Defender.

Hi there, so a few points to your Q's. Re the theft, no it wasn't from our house, which I'm glad about, it was off a public car park. I can only assume there was someone there with a relay device. I didn't have a physical deterrent on the car, the next one will have.Other cars possibly to consider:

We've looked at a few options now, in fact this afternoon. A few comments:
X5 - looked previously and to me, the size of the inside doesn't match the outside, the 3rd row seats wouldn't work for us
Kia - Again I looked previously and maybe I should give it more consideration, but I struggle to get my head around a 1600 cc, albeit with turbo and elec, pulling a fully laden, 7 up, with luggage and giving the effortless drive that 500 + lb of torque gives...
GLE - looked at a 400d this afternoon, very nice, same small seats but I could probably forgive it, but rare used, still over £50k even with a few miles on and 80k new
GLS - We had a GL for 3 years (420cdi) back a few years ago, decent car and the new GLS looks good, but I think it looks bigger than the Disco and a decent used one is still 70k in 400d form.
Q7 - still haven't managed to view one, I think it may have been an option, but we've reverted to the previous choice and I'm deposit down on another discovery. I've read the 3rd row seats are pretty much like an X5
I would be tempted by an XC90 twin engine, but my wife who uses it most hasn't really gotten on with the loaner XC90
To be honest, we went through the whole, what is big enough, powerful enough, comfortable enough and within budget last time and it's a small pool to choose from, with for me the Disco giving the best blend of all.
As for reliability, I had the last one from 27k to 40k miles and had no problems at all, which I know is only what you should expect. This time I've landed a 2 yr LR warranty for some added piece of mind. Overall, I think the practicality is unbeatable, though the underlying build quality isn't Mercedes level, or possibly German in general.
As a road trip car for a big family, I think they are pretty unbeatable.
Have thought about replacing my wife’s 2018 Disco a few times, as it’s now on 65k and likely to expire in a blizzard of warning lights and bongs. But, given dog carrying and family/towing duties, there’s not really anything I can think of that would be better. Bar another Disco.

I think you made the right choice sticking with the Disco.
I've just forked out over £3k for a gearbox rebuild, and it's an old Disco 4 (59 plate) 140k miles.
Doesn't make a huge amount of sense when you consider what it's probably worth now, but they are great cars.

I hired one for a big family holiday. It was fine. Actually, it was bloody brilliant - the drive, comfort, tech etc was first class. The interior is a lovely place to spend time, and you would get a top spec, fully loaded one for your budget. Heated/cooled seats, radar cruise/lane assist etc, remote park, cameras all round, top spec sound system, pano roof, blinds in the back, mood lighting, the works - I can't think of anything it didn't have. And it will be a hundred times more reliable than a JLR product. Previously I would borrow a mate's '69 plate RRS 3.0TD, and the Kia was better in every respect. 40mpg too, without trying. If I had £50k to spend on a family SUV what's where my money would go. Here's a good review:

I wanted to push my Disco 5 off a cliff and never set foot in a JLR dealership again, but here I am with two JLR cars on the driveway - again! There’s just something about them that the Germans - even if technically better cars - can’t touch.

How many people coming out of LR / Volvo are going to go for a Kia? It might be the better car (and probably more reliable), but christ, what would the neighbours think
Personally, I think it's a good option but it's really a non-starter in this conversation..

The Kia is very likely to be a much better prospect when you consider all aspects of ownership. That aside, is a Discovery really something that will be admired by the neighbours?!?
My in-laws had one for years and there isn't much, if anything, that can rival it for the practicality without buying a van, but I never saw it as aspirational, it's a tool and a very good one at that.
