Cheap 4x4 basher for young driver

My son is 17 shortly and after a car.
Whilst I understand Aygo/Fiesta etc, in reality as an active teenager he's looking for something he and his mates can chuck rucksacks/tents/maybe sleep in the back of rather than cruise around mcd carpark in.
Whilst he's not precious, a Panda 4x4 is a geriatric step too far for him. My first thought was an old Jimny.
Any ideas?

P.S. Insurance will obviously dictate in the end so options may be limited to unsexy 5-seat estates. Get a quote on a Saab or something, everyone's forgotten about those. Citroen C5 estate? Mondeo? Insignia?
I'm guessing vans are expensive to insure for private use but possibly worth checking just in case... there's a chance they'll have an upside because they have only one or two passenger seats.
The way these threads usually go is that OP discovers that everything is eye-wateringly expensive to insure and Junior ends up in a Corsa anyway.

Ha, well he's not short that's for sure. Maybe he could get an awning etc. Or just use a tent. Outback a good shout, but they're £15k+
There's no fixed budget as such (mainly because I don't to turn this into a discussion about how much to spend on a first car), but a few thousand, no more than £10k. I might use it myself occasionally for wet dogs etc.

No doesn't have to be a 4x4 but does need to be on the tankier side of car. It needs to be consciously not a corsa etc. I have one of these https://www.qwant.com/?client=ext-chrome-sb&t=... which he really wants, but sadly it needs to go to the rust bucket in the sky.
I'd definitely go for a Subaru Forester. Plenty to choose from, petrol, diesel, manual or auto and with different engine sizes. Just found this 2008 Forester XC, 78,810 miles, petrol, manual, 156 bhp, permanent all wheel drive, £4,495
