Lease / Used / New / Nearly New??!?!?!?! What to do!!!

ok so, last month I was all head set about get a comfy saloon for my trips to the office and a spare vehicle....then....the wife got involved..... oh dear.

Anyway, she's suggested that in all reality our daily driver (VW caravelle) is a bit of a pain to do the daily tasks (school run/shops etc) and having a petrol car would be better for that, nothing crazy there.

So armed with our toddler, the massive buggy and the car seat we've been to test a few cars.

I'd originally started looking at leasing something, means I get something new and ideally reliable!! So we tested:

Hybrid Kona - didn't like it
Qashqai - liked it the best so far, if a little underpowered
Volvo V40 - boot too small for buggy
Juke - as above

Now we haven't tested, but quite like a T-roc....that's the budget now into £20k and also the Mokka (but this is looking too small) and the Grandland - those have good offers on brand new on PCP which keeps my budget to around £350 a month (albeit after £7000 deposit)

So i'm just going in circles really. The cars we can find at £7k are a concern, the last 3 cars we've bought upto £12k have been awful! (£11k Mondeo had head gasket go and dealer pretty much washed his hands of it... long story short - we lost out) so i'm worried about buying another lemon even if that was purely bad luck.

So do I go out and buy a new Qashqai on PCP? or perhaps a tiguan.... or do I get a lease.... or convince her we're better off getting something older and hope for the best...

We want Auto
We want an SUV (which is a side step from my preferred saloon but it's a change of role now)
I'd like repayments to be around £350 per month ish
I'd like something a little more powerful than a 1.2T with 0-60 in 11 seconds..... zzzzzzzz

The Tiguan seems the best option but again, do I lease something, do I try to get a new one on PCP with guarenteed future value and all that jazz...

The dull answer is probably just to buy a used Qashqai and let the kids trash it for a few years, whilst weeping at the cost of used cars these days.

(Young kids in shiny new lease cars just seems like a recipe for disaster for end-of-term damage checks)

Grand land. Rubbish!
Mokka. The old version had a tiny boot and was a bit cramped. Not sure about the new one.
Quashqai. Vanilla. Cheap to run. Reliable.
Tiguan. Had one for 3.5 years. 1.4 TSI, all motion. DSG. Great car, loved it.

Buying secondhand is a good idea but you have make sure it’s reliable. Your Mrs won’t thank you if it breaks down.

Lease is better than PCP in my view.

Seconded. We did just this. The Qashqai did a job, cleaned up well, swallowed the kids stuff and was fairly reliable. There's a reason why it sells so well. Wait a few years and then get something you consider "better".

You said you didn't like the Kona but have you looked at the bigger Tucson?

We've had a couple of Hyundais as family cars now and reliability has been excellent.

I don't think you'd have any issues with something like that and the engine seems decently powerful for what it is.

we didn't try it but yes, it's on the potential list, the more powerful engine is appealing. I mean I don't need to set the world ablaze with performance but I found the Kona quite noisy and with the underpowered engine it was just a dull experience all round and not something I'd want to spend £20k on.

But yes, the Tucson is a potential too

£19k loan over 5 years is £350 ish a month.

Buy £17-18k of Skoda Kodiaq or xc60, or similar and hold back £1-2k to cover any repairs.

Better car that what you looked at (my assumption only to be fair) and the cheaper option than a new car lease.

How about a traditional hatch - Focus, Astra, Civic, Golf, Ceed, i30, Corolla in no particular order. They drive better than soft roaders and were seen as perfectly practical until the last 10 years or so

Agree get something older you don't mind getting trashed by kids! I bought the missus a nice new car last year... after 6 months there were 2 parking dents and crap everywhere inside, it drove me mad.

We had to move on anyway as found out a third kid was on the way, but I bought something almost a third of the price and am much happier now. There's an even bigger dent, and stained seats and crap in every pocket, and it's bloody perfect lol. Throwaway car really, and it brings peace to my mind knowing I didn't spend crazy amounts on it.

I did get the wheels refurbed though as decent wheels is just my thing, and she's not kerbed them yet to be fair!

hmmm i've seen a c-max 2.0 petrol auto for £4500. Might just get that. Wait couple of years and see how we get on
