On the hunt for an M140i, but am considering F30 LCI 340i's.

I really like the interior of the F30 LCI model and comes loaded with lots of kit, more than the F20 will have, that's for sure. I like the steering feel of the F30, and the B58/ZF8 combo goes well enough. The reviews/videos I've looked at featuring F20 M-lites, go on about brutal acceleration, but I got none of this feeling from the F30, which is not unexpected given it's a larger car. I assume a tune will fix this. The exhaust note, even in sport+ mode is a bit subdued, but again, nothing that an exhaust can't fix.

Is the M140i that much better dynamically compared to a 340?

IMO the F 3 series has much better handling balance than the 1 series (although I’d also say the 2 series feels better than the 1). On the 340i try to find one with the official (dealer fit) MPSSK power kit

Thanks for the replies so far, something to consider. I've had an F20 125i M-Sport for a week and found that to be quite fun for what it was.

The 340i is under 100KG heavier, that's less than 7%; I can't imagine that has much affect on acceleration in reality.

Had a 340i… it’s was nice and balanced. Don’t miss it but enjoyed it when I had it.

Throwing a spanner in the works.

I've narrowed down my search to a few cars.

I could potentially have a 340i M-Sport loaded with options for similar money to a F22 M235i. Both options are cheaper than the asking price for most M140i's advertised. M240s are out of the question as they are nearly as much as an M2 where I am.

Should I go for a M235i given it's 'worse' value for money than the 340 (and maybe even M140)?

I’d go for the 340i

I’ve got an M235i.

I’d go for the 340i.

Unless it’s manual. God I wish my 235i was a manual…

340i is more grown up and doesn’t seem to deliver its power as aggressively (haven’t driven the dealer upgrade version) as the M140i which feels more fun and hooligan but sacrifices some handling/refinement.

Depends what you are after but I’d suggest driving both and deciding from there. Both can be easily modified to fix any short comings if that’s an option.

Had an M140i and now have an F30 340i. The latter does feel more grown up and the gearbox isn’t tuned for the same punch in the back as the the M140i. That can make it feel less obviously quick but it’s really not. Still a pretty rapid car and more than enough for the roads today. It’s also nice and discreet which I value.

I’m approaching mid-50’s now though, so that more grown-up feel appeals. If I was 20’s or 30’s I’d probably opt for the smaller hooligan.

For me it would be the 340i out of the three, it's the more resolved package.

Consider a 440i grancoupe (or the coupe if you don't need the rear doors?)

In my experience, the 4 series (440i) is better equipped than the 340i.

Get either car with an MPPSK or budget for one - opens up that B58 engine even more.

M235i are on my radar as the cheapest car that came up on my search on AutoTrader...

0-60 under 5 secs
Manual
Petrol
2/3 door

Not a bad package at all for under £15k

Alternatives for me was an M240i but the extra expensive doesn't seem worth it for 0.2 faster to 60, unless there's other differences I'm missing? Or an older TT RS.

I think that'll mean a pre-Feb 2018 build OP, if that helps.

Slightly better efficiency and also apparently more reliable if the owners groups on Facebook are anything to go by.

I have a 340 LCI MPPSK definitely a keeper as struggling to find anything to replace it with. Just as fast as a M340i but you lose the sound which to me is half the fun. Power/Torque increases to 360/500nm with the MPPSK and that’s fun pushing you in the back with the pops and bangs in sport/sport+ but also not much of a difference to standard in comfort. Just ensure you don’t get one with the PPF as you can’t have the MPPSK with that installed.

Do you know if the car I posted above would have PPF?

That should be fine as the PPF install started from July 2018 and that seems to be a Jan 2018 build.
If you’re interested in that car I would ask why the 2nd service was late (amber in service history means it was done late).
