Run around cars

Hey,

Need some help/thoughts/advice on change of cars.

Currently in a X3M comp and looking to chop that in maybe an R8 mk2. That will open up a need for a run around daily.

I have thought old banger £3k, then cheap lease on a C3 and then ev. It would be around 5/6k miles pa, enough space for two adults and 2 little ones and boot space.

Couple of questions
- cheap lease or pcp?
- ev or ICE?
- car recommendations

3k is not ‘an old banger’.

It’s perfectly functional, safe motoring in something ten to fifteen years old. Buy car out right and away you go.

I have just bought a 'cheap' car last week. Its a 7 year old Astra 1.6 diesel with 68k on the clock. It is ULEZ compliant, tax free, and does over 60mpg. Cost £5k.
Is it exciting? Absolutely not.
Is it a dam good car for doing what a car is actually supposed to do? Absolutely.
No need to spend more unless you choose to.

For 3k I'd have the nicest Saab convertible I could find, regardless of spec, or the nicest Volvo v70.

Thanks all. Always had a soft spot for Volvos. Apologies for the £3k banger, this was coming from some cars seen.

Old Volvos seem to have escaped silly pricing. I’ve just paid £4650 for a 61 plate V60 D5 R Design on 85k, full dealer history. £3k gets you in a 2007-2009 car with a few miles on.

EV for me

Easy to drive, instant heat and pre conditioning in winter for short trips, lots of free places to charge, I don’t like older cars nor spending time going to the garage for repairs, I don’t like manual cars for around town driving, I don’t like diesel or the smells they puff out or having a DPF on short trips.


I prefer leasing, it’s just pain free and with a home charger cheaper to run a EV mile for mile.

We went for the old Civic idea for our runaround to keep the miles off my 1 Series and it's been a brilliant thing - dirt cheap to run, wants for very little and is comfy enough to smoke around in.

It's the 1.8 so capable of a decent turn of speed if you're willing to use the revs and generally corners without crashing.

Expect broken A/C though, they all do that sir.

I'm also looking at a Honda Civic but a Type S as a cheap 2nd car / runaround, £2-3k gets you quite a nice one and the petrols are all ULEZ as well...

Yes, I have a 1 Series as well that I'd rather not run into the ground doing short trips round town and taking stuff to the dump.
