W205 C43 or BMW 440i with stage 1 map?
Discussion
Just taken a deposit on the BMW 435D i'm selling so looking to jump back into the Petrol world as a weekend / evening play thing. I was going to get a SUV however I've been given the green light to get something less practical
So here's the issue. I like torque so it makes sense to go V6 petrol route however I'm still looking at the BMW 440i but would need a stage one map to get more torque.
So the question is - C43 or 440i with a Map?

The thing is if you want a car mapped surely it's better to buy one & map it yourself, also for comparison purposes you should test drive a stock 440i.
A mapped C43 will be something else again.
Agree! There are maps and maps. A mapped C43 will be something else again.
You need a good, trusted company. Definitely buy and then map yourself after you have done your research.
The B58 is plenty torquey IMO. I had it in a 540i and it never lacked torque even from low revs, from which it would pick up effortlessly. The way BMW tune and match the gearbox to the engine makes a huge difference to drivability.
You're going to notice a difference coming from a high powered diesel to any petrol engine like this, but I really wouldn't say a remap of the B58 is mandatory.
That aside, choosing between these two cars is like choosing your favourite cake. They're both two versions of basically the same idea in real-world driving, so I would worry less about on-paper spec's and go with the one your heart pulls you towards.

I might be slightly biased but would be the b58 for me...
Very quick once fettled and still returns decent economy when on long runs...
Think they might be cheaper than the equivalent merc too?
340i i would prefer over the 4...
340i seems to have a cult following, especially in the US.Very quick once fettled and still returns decent economy when on long runs...

in terms of fettling:
Stock: 326bhp
Stage 1: 400bhp
Stage 2: 450bhp
Stage 2+: 480bhp

Which ones ? Like mentioned above the b58 and similar usually need a stage 2/+ to see them figures.
DMS stage 1 on a 340i will see 440bhp. M3/M4/M5 all will be over 100bhp from remap too
so will C43 C63 the turbo ones. A45 too.
S4/S5/rs3/rs6
plenty of examples out there.

In relation to the B58 engined cars I have a 240i with a stage 1 map running near enough 420bhp, I owned it for 2 years and never felt it was underpowered if i'm honest but I thought I'd give a remap a try having heard good things.
I didn't get my car tested on a dyno prior to the remap but i am pretty sure they would dyno over the quoted 320bhp as standard, a number of tuning companies have had them on a dyno and they consistently come out closer to 340bhp.
Top end figures aside I am very impressed by the whole way the car drives with a remap, it feels significantly smoother, not that it felt rough as standard but the difference is very noticeable and really feels a lovely thing to drive, the power delivery is effortless.
Mine is a manual so I can't comment on gearbox maps.
I was planning on replacing mine next year at some point but it will be a very hard thing to replace, the likely contenders will be an M3 or M4
