I've not driven the CLS but do have an E Class. It's a different class of car to the 3 Series, bigger, quieter, much nicer inside.

+1 for e-class.

very comfy seats in the rears and plenty of space. They make great taxi's.

I'd say the CLS320/350cdi is the pick the V6cdi's are nigh on bulletproof.

Run 2 new 330d - both faultless and required nothing other than service / normal maintenance.
2000 to 2014 (manual) - 250k (same clutch)
2014 to present (auto) - 165k

Brilliant commuting cars……..

I have an E 320 CDI.

The engines are bulletproof apart from oil cooler seals which cost a grand to fix although I believe they may have gone to a different seal in the later 2011 on mondels? I've just had mine done last week.

The Merc is a nice place to be but it's built for commuting on the motorway and sweeping B roads, it's not much fun on anything twisty. If that's what you're after get the BMW.

I believe the BMW has the ZF8 gearbox, which would be the pick of the bunch.
