What are the "best value" cars

I have just sold my 2011 520d Msport into WBAC as it was literally falling apart. I am now in the situation where I need a car in the next week or so, with the dealers warranty in case anything goes wrong, so no private sales. So, no pressure...
I will probably keep the car for a year and although it probably wont be my ideal/dream car I want something I will enjoy. I have got around £10k and it needs to be reliable too. I live in a semi rural area and also do a 100 round trip commute once or twice a week. I have circa £10k and can probably add a few more £k for the right car. The car needs to have a bit "go" too. The car should be a GT, saloon or decent 5 door hatchback, with a relatively modern cabin, infotainment. Importantly the must be good value and auto too. I am also trying to avoid Audis as I find them soulless!
I initially looked at Jaguar XF's but most are the beige interior that I detest and I found the screen/infotainment awful. They get better from 2015, but the price jumps massively. I like the M135i, ticks the cabin, comfort and "go" boxes, but they are very expensive from dealers and with low resale values. I have been looking at the BMW 640d, and they tick every box apart from value, they are eye wateringly expensive for the year. The Merc E-series coupe amg circa £10k for a 2013 model looks for be better value whilst ticking the boxes so this could be an option. I have looked at Infiniti's and you seem to get a lot of bang for your buck but there doesnt seem to be many in my area.

I bought an E46 Touring blind from eBay for £1800 a few years back., Used it every day since and it's gone up in value. Don't know if it's been the 'best' value, but not too shabby.
Seriously, don't dismiss private sales as there are real bargains to be had. When I was last car shopping at dealers, some of the cars presented were awful. A dealers warranty certainly won't cover anything that could go wrong either.
I'd pick a private sale from a decent seller without hesitation.

I agree, there are some great deals to be had private, especially from fellow petrolhead types.
