Ok long time since I posted but hoping I can get some advice.

I'm in the market for a new car for myself that will be used as a daily (22mile round commute) dog carrier with the occasional week away.
I've got a budget of up to £30K at a push, but that would have to be a perfect car. I wouldn't mind keeping a bit back to buy my son a car as he has just turned 17 though i have another savings stash for that. (£5K)
I also have a nice old barge, a 2012 jaguar XF S diesel, its on 120K and I would keep it if I didn't have a son who wants a car and a van that I don't need. its valued at £2.5K but worth a bit more as its FSH, good tires, good condition, etc.
So this is a 2 cars required and 2 cars, well 1 is a van, to move on. Say £30k for both cars, a little more if my car was exactly what i wanted.
I don't mind an older car and keeping money back, ie seen an A4 Allroad today, high miles newer shape but is missing a service. It was only £17K

I am looking to PX a van which is on HP and I am a cash buyer for the new car/cars. I owe £16.5K on the van its a VW Caddy with 33k on it and a nice spec for a van.

So far i've looked at
I have been offered £15K PX against an A6 avant 2019 4.0tdi, which is a decent spec and a nice thing but isn't floating my boat.
335D looking at this tomorrow, black, red leather, this is from the dealer who offered £15K for the van, a nice looking thing, but who doesn't spec heated seats?
2 x Audi A6 allroads both around £24K, I like the size and they feel robust and the 268 I drove was rapid but they handle like a sack of spuds
S4 Avant, really nice car, very top of the budget, but really nice. drove beautifully and I've had an S3 in the past so do like the way they drive.
Volvo XC60, boot too small
Merc C220d 4matic estate AMG spec, didn't drive it as the guy doesn't take vans in PX but it was very well specc'd and pretty cheap considering. it was also the only car the other half has said she liked.
Merc E220d 4matic estate AMG spec, a very nice thing with burmeister sound but a terrible colour
All the cars ive looked at are 4wd but this isnt a prerequisite.
Any help or considerations would be great.

I have a 2018 S4 Avant, had it since July 2022 and I actually had the A6 40TDI as my company car for three years before the S4.

Is there anything you'd like to know in particular?

No nothing in particular, I have a head vs heart going on with the choices of Audi. I know the 40tdi would be very capable and sensible, but I don't do diesel miles, hence the diesels i would prefer would be 3 litres, The allroad ticks the boxes but I wouldn't be precious about it, the S4 I would love, but with 2 dogs I would be scared of wrecking it.

If you don't do the mileage, don't go for the A6 40TDI, it's okay power wise but nothing to shout about, I averaged 45mpg over 50k miles.

In my V6 petrol S4, I drive around mostly in Efficiency, but switch to Individual (everything set to Dynamic except for suspension) when the road permits. I've averaged 29.9 mpg over 9k miles since July, including a 44mpg drive from Chester to Teddington (using adaptive cruise control).

Not sure what dogs you have, but I have a large doberman and he's got plenty of room in the boot.

Ive put a deposit on a car today. I went for a volvo XC60 T8 Hybrid. I was really impressed on the short test drive at not only the pace of it but the options and general comfort. A nice place to sit and a very decent economy, it had a long term average of over 100MPG. whilst it wont set the world alight with the handing i found it a much better steer than the Audi A6 Allroad. I might have to get a roof box for holidays but i can handle that.
