I’m in the market for a new car. Both dealers included this in their quotes. It looks like another PCP, gap insurance type rip off to me.

Anyone know differently?

My neighbour has it, and it makes a 10 year old black Tesla look more shiny than you would expect without a lot of polishing.
However it is not very resistant to bird poo- she had a matt patch several inches across on the bonnet, in spite of cleaning it off promptly, which led to the need for the whole car to be recoated to get an even finish.
This would put me off, but it depends on whether you have a bird problem or not. It was not just the cost- she was without her car for several days for the recoat to be done.

Can you not negotiate this into the price? I've had it or similar on my last 6 or 7 cars and never paid for it as an extra, new or used.

Spend your money using a local detailer who will do it properly rather than through a dealership would be my advice. How much are they charging?

Having seen how bad the factory paint finish is on some new cars I'd hesitate having any coating applied until I'd actually seen the car prior.

A MD won't go to the extent of polishing any defects out and will just fire the car over to the in-house car washers for a wash down and the coating applied straight afterwards.

Ceramic coating is great but it isn't a magical cure all and I'd rather find a good detailer who would machine polish the car and then apply a coating, obviously would be additional expense over and above.

Absolute ste. Dealer supposedly applied it to our CX5 after we test drove it and agreed to buy it. Strange, as the same bird poop was still on the roof. The interior treatment was equally abysmal too. With proper application by professionals, it may be OK, but applied by the "valeters" at the car showroom, no thanks.

Absolutely don't then! You could get a proper polish and ceramic coating for well within that.

If you NEVER clean your car then get it. If you clean your car monthly or more often then you don't need it. It's snake oil.

If you are willing to DIY then buy an Autoglym Lifeshine Kit here:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255615479921?hash=item3...

The Autoglym Lifeshine Kit screams Professional Use Only, and it's the easiest stuff in the universe to apply. It even says in the instructions that if you mess it up, apply more product and spread it out!

If you really must have GardX:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/274579942878?hash=item3...tongue outagAAOSwzPlftDQD&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAAwCSBvuSER1YB7X5aX5Wo80o2EfcOJQRaAtV5X1jwhO05cCvmOHDSk%2FyjA3ef31dtQg6YOTOrBAfWQEdHGwzQd61qHTVcHN6XXHroxXrTYklvYwIgfpe35VM5C6RniNKwXitgwyf2j9ZhgERwGRuzBIzR5JdnwsS%2Bl1YnX5mUZzqvloftiRJKxOYnX2qXqelJ7MUwy2h6Ud21R3hBXNmAijIpdLJ9j7GqKQMonW7bfAPk1RSvui5sv1%2FwG16TQJfn4w%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-aExp-AYg

These are 2 random kits I picked off eBay. Some of them have the more complete kit with applicators and microfibres and pump sprays. I bought 20x Autoglym kits off Facebook for £25 a while ago and managed to cover 2 cars with each kit.

Why is this snake oil? It's commission led: Salesman gets £xx for selling it to you, Sales Manager gets £xx, Valeter gets nothing as he's paid hourly, dealership gets £xxx, Snake Oil company gets £xxx. One of my friends used to work for Volkswagen and he hated selling this stuff.

If you want a ceramic coating get a detailer to do it as they'll do a much better job for £750

An utter rip off, probably slapped on by their youngest member of staff.

As with dealers’ GAP offers, often £499 for cover that a decent broker could provide for £150.

Buy the car and the road tax and nothing else.

I was offered this for free on my 335d during my negotiations when I bought it in 2017. I’m not sure it has made much difference. I don’t wash my cars that regularly, and they always come up OK with just Autoglym Shampoo and Conditioner. I wouldn’t pay over the top for it.

It's worth making it clear that we're talking about 2 different things here - a dealer getting your car ceramic coated and you getting it ceramic coated - these are definitely different!

Dealer jobs are notoriously poor whereas a proper detailer (for similar or less money) will be much better especially in terms of prep.

For those that think nick is joking, my local BMW dealer has a standard automatic car wash at the rear of their service department - the ones with the rotating/flailing brushes Take your BMW/MINI there and end up with swirls. I used to tell them not to wash the car and even used to scotchtape a post-it note to the steering wheel to remind them.

Thinking back at it, I can't imagine anything worse for the car, but then this is a dealer where the dealer principal has a reputation and blocks the electric car chargers at a nearby retail park with all his and customer cars.

Sadly I think i can top that frown the dealer let a gorilla loose on my car with a rotary and hologrammed the fk out of it

Didn't have a pic to hand but it's similar to this i found on google

My concern about the dealer applying Gard X is that it would be applied by somebody with that level of skill/care, over the top of swirls etc

Ouch!

I've not used GardX, but I've used Autoglym Lifeshine Carbon Coating and it really is lovely stuff to look at and apply. A deep gloss on my resale silver car and I imagine it would be deeper on a dark coloured car. The Turtle Wax Ceramic spray I used after washing a car attracts every molecule of dust in the atmosphere, yet the Autoglym stuff was anti-static and repelled dust for about a week.

Application is apply on one panel with one cloth, it doesn't haze, but wait 30 secs and buff with a clean cloth. Very little pressure is needed to buff as it forms such a silky slippery layer. That's it. No hazing and working hard to remove the haze. You really can't go wrong with this stuff despite all the PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY warnings.

At first I thought this might be the retail variant of Lifeshine, but one of the questions says this:

Question:i have life shine and swirls, is this as good as life shine after i remove the swirls and apply this? please recomend a product to remove life shine
Answer:If a vehicle is treated with Lifeshine we would not recommend using the UHD Coating as the surface Is already protected with a more durable coating.
If you want to remove or improve the appearance of the swirl marks you can use Super Resin Polish. To help top up your existing Lifeshine protection we recommend using a… see more
