Peugeot 508sw

Looking for a semi luxury big estate barge that has decent ish economy. This thing keeps popping up. Haven't had a Peugeot since my little 106 in college. How are they are these days? 508 any good?

I like the look of the hybrid electric one, RTX i believe, but they seem like hens teeth

Anyone got any thoughts on these? or any suggestions for things to look out for?

We took a look at the 508SW and the new 308SW recently, the 508 has certainly taken a nice step in the right direction in terms of both styling and internal quality/feel, however the 308 was even better. In the end we decided to keep our Tucson but if the hybrid 308 had stacked up financially then we'd have taken it in a heartbeat based on the feel of the car. At the end of the day their GFV is so low that the deals at the time were painful.

My problem is that once you've dug deep enough to get the hybrid 508sw (Maybe £30k for 2years and 20k miles) you can add a few K more and have a new shape 330e - I don't have a crystal ball and I could be wrong but I'd expect the residual of the BMW to be far stronger than the pug.

Personal view- there's nothing semi.luxury about them, they look quite nice and when toy first sit in one the first impressions are good but look beneath the shiny service and the build quality is pretty cheap IMO.

I dont like them, we have them on fleet at work

Very limited experience, but I'd echo this. A work colleague had one (albeit the previous generation), my diesel Focus felt quieter and more refined.

A lot of car for the money, especially if you opt for the low running 1.6 HDI engine. Only engine I would entertain, I like them.

Great when specced with the pano roof too. World away from the previous 407SW it replaced.

There's been a Mk1 508 (SW and saloon) in between the 407 and this new Mk2 508. Mk 1 508s are very cheap now, and would make an excellent shed to replace an old Vectra were it ever needed. Available with the 1.6 HDi.

It would be used a dog car and a few long runs a month along with carrying lots of stuff locally.. So ideally less than 7k which means it would be the earliest generation of the 508.

This is what I was hoping to hear. Might have to take a look at some. Of course, theres nothing available locally.

Citroen C5 is pretty much the same car underneath.

I'd look at Renault Lagunas too, if I were you.

Pick the best example you can find from those 3 models and you hopefully won't go far wrong.

I did look at the c5 but couldnt see much except the 2.0 engine which has pretty bad mpg compared to the 1.6 available in the 508

Fairy nuff.

Regarding the Laguna, I used to have a 2008 (58) Laguna Mk3 2.0dci which returned 70mpg on the motorway when driven gently. A monumentally economical car for its size, comfort and abilities.

EDIT: Intrigued (sad life, I know) I had a look for 1.6 HDI C5s. They do exist:

I'd take a look at this late GT the 1.6d's are a bit short geared/underpowered for the size of car so don't actually do that much better on fuel:

In all honesty I'd go for a post facelift Insignia the oil pick pipe issues are sorted & they're a good car full stop & you'll get a good one for your budget.
