Car tax renewal notice, but car sold to dealer
Discussion
Not had this happen before.
I traded a car in with a dealer on 24th March. It was a "distance sale", deal done on the phone, with the dealer delivering my new car and taking away the old one. Because I had a 14 day cooling off period, he didn't transfer my old car into the trade until the second week of April.
I've had the V5 for the new car, and a refund cheque from DVLA for unused tax on the old car arrived about 3 weeks ago.
I haven't had the usual acknowledgement slip that you get from DVLA for notifying a sale, just the refund cheque.
Today I received a Vehicle Tax Reminder for the old car.
I tried to check the tax status on the .gov website, but it says "registration mark not found".
I also tried to start the tax renewal, but I got "reference number not recognised".
I tried to notify the sale to DVLA, but can't do that without the V5 document reference number, which I don't have because the dealer took the V5.
I'm guessing that whoever bought my old car has put a private plate on it? Would that explain why the original registration number isn't on the system now?
Presumably it's just a DVLA mix-up, and I can safely ignore it?

Reminders can be printed and posted upto six weeks before tax is actually due so it may be just a case of it was in the system before you got rid of your car and it’s finally dropped on your door mat.
You’ve got the DVLA acknowledgment that it no longer belongs to you so that should suffice.

You’re supposed to look out for the acknowledgement and contact them after four weeks if you haven’t had it. It can be chased through the DVLA contact page.Presumably it's just a DVLA mix-up, and I can safely ignore it?
That said, they must have processed it if you’ve had the refund cheque,
