Selling an old bus on eBay, sells for £900. Buyer has a zero feedback account, recently set up. Calls up, asks lots of questions, we arrange a time for collection.
Lots of text messages, "I won't mess you about, I'm definitely coming to collect, I'm old school, my word is my bond".
Collection day comes and goes. Simply doesn't turn up, won't answer the phone.
Why do people do this? what possible benefit can they derive from being like this? I really can't work it out

Had a bloke come to see my Alfa, came with insurance, took it for the test drive, said he'd buy it but no deposit. 3 weeks later and 10-15 calls he offers to make a deposit. Nothing came. Gave him the ultimatum, 3 days later I sell the car to motorway, he calls up the next day and says he's ready to transfer the money.
Turns out he didn't have the cash to start with.
Some are genuine, but likewise I've also had 4 people say they are going to arrive and are on their way but never show.
Best one was a chap leaving 100quid and then never hearing from him again ..

2 weeks ago I advertised a rare motorbike engine at a cheap price to get it moved. A guy contacted me and agreed the full price and would pay £100 deposit and 1300 on collection. He sent the deposit.
He then asked if I had a carb, I said that one wasn’t with it but I thought I might have a spare I would chuck in plus some other spares.
I messaged twice over the last 2 weeks to confirm a collection date and both times mentioned that I could not locate a carb but if I find it I would have it when he collects or would post on to him. He then asked for £150 discount. I said no and he got narky. I just refunded the deposit and told him to do one.
He then asked if I had a carb, I said that one wasn’t with it but I thought I might have a spare I would chuck in plus some other spares.

I've learned that it's actually quite important to not offer anything or try and be helpful. Punters just then get over emotional if the offer doesn't come to anything. Consumer and benefits society, so many princesses waddling around thinking everyone else owes them something. It's a sad state of affairs. The other thing that I've learned is that overly obtuse language in the advert appears to scare these people off and does seem to just leave normals. And as Ray listed above, those classic statements are nearly always an announcement that the person is a loser.
I'm also guilty of simply ignoring badly written questions. Life is just too short and while it will be treating a few people unfairly it's just more prudent to not engage.
The most recent thing I sold was an iPhone. It was akin to selling a BMW. The bulk of the contact was from utter gibbons. I sold it to a lady who had written politely but offered less than the others.

I think this is the best summary and you could drive yourself crazy trying to rationalise it any deeper than that.It saddens me that the older I get the less trust and respect I have for my fellow humans. I find it easier to assume everyone is a moron and then at least I can be pleasantly surprised when people actually behave rationally with decency and common sense.
Was selling our Sharan, had this woman call and say it was just what she wanted, asked loads of questions and said to make sure I dont sell it before she can get there, cancelled my plans for the day and waited in for her, the allotted time comes and goes.
Was up late anyway, decided to turn in at 2 am as had been watching a film, so I gave her a ring
"Hi, was just wondering what time you were coming to look at the car, been sat waiting since about 11 am yesterday"
Suffice to say she didn't find it amusing, but I hope she realised why I might have been pissed off.

holes, stick something on FB marketplace. Had a phone for sale, woman rings and says she will have it but not when, doesn't ring back or arrange to collect so I sell it (was pretty cheap) to the next caller who turned up within the hour.
She rings back the following day to arrange collection and has a dicky fit when I tell her I have sold it, calls me all the names under the sun and says that she hopes I am satisfied as its for her son who is 13 and is now crying, saying he needed to toughen himself up a bit if that makes him cry was not the right thing to say apparently as she went mental and then started saying he had some unspecified disability or something.

Someone won an eBay auction for my old Rover, responded to my messages and arranged to collect. I stayed in all day and he didn't turn up or answer any of my calls. Heard nothing from him since.

, but what comes around goes around I guess...I can’t explain it either, I wish I could having just passed up a sunny Sunday afternoon on the bike to wash the car I’m selling and wait in for someone who was definitely coming from Herefordshire to York to look at it….

I think there's also some wishful thinking involved- would dearly love to buy your car, but doesn't quite have the means.
I spend countless hours trawling through the likes of Autoscout looking for my next car- but can guarantee I'll be looking at stuff way beyond a sensible budget within 5 minutes. Granted, I'm not dumb enough to put a bid in, but I think it's fairly normal to want stuff you think you could have but in reality probably could not....
I don't get the ghosting thing at all though- fine, put in a bid that you believe you could just about stretch to, but if you win and the money isn't there, 'fess up and explain.
I also agree with a previous poster- the more they claim to be honest, not a timewaster and won't mess you around- the more the alarm bells would start to ring!

Most of the time it’s because they’re shopping around and found a better offer. They just haven’t told you this.
Another example is a customer asking for a quotation for some work. The quote they get back is so ridiculous there’s no point in them carrying on the email conversation and the customer moves on.

Mate of mine just sold a little cheapy sub-£1k car on FB marketplace. Mot till next year, low mileage, advert wording crystal clear and 110% honest, runs and drives well, has a few dents and marks etc with pictures. Showed me a list of about 60 messages ! Odd questions and demands, offers of half of the already low asking price. It's not on when an honest person just wants to sell something without a fuss. How did we end up here ?

We've always been 'here' it's just that prior to social media 'here' was a geographical location that we all chose to never go near. Post social media we are only ever an erroneous moment from these vacant, uncivilised, self engrossed, meat units being in our living room. I'm surprised that the old rag and bone man hasn't returned as there are many of us with stuff to sell but absolutely no stomach for dealing with the act of selling and happy to share the bulk of the proceeds.
