I have a 718 Boxster 2.0 turbo and it is brilliant - great fun to drive, quick enough to not need the S version, surprisingly economical (high 30’s, low 40’s realistic on a long run) & equally surprisingly practical with 2 boots.
Servicing every 2 years or 20,000 miles (main dealers are getting expensive though).
One thing I would say is the Cayman with it being a coupe is that the engine noise is more noticeable inside the cabin (and that has been the case with all of the Cayman models).
Can easily be a daily driver but running costs with higher mileage may rack up a bit.

I clocked up considerable miles in all of them and didn't have many issues,i guess i got lucky.

I recently test drove a Ford Focus ST and a Hyundai i30n and had planned on buying new but i found them both boring,capable but with a bit of budget creep/man maths a new Cayman 2.0 or Alpine becomes far more appealing...There is one stumbling block,it needs to be Automatic (all mentioned are) as a recent motorcycle accident has been giving me left foot issues which may lead to amputation in a worse case scenario.

My commute is approx 50 miles each day on A/B roads but i only work 2/3 days each week so plenty of spare driving time.
I don't want a garage queen and prefer to enjoy my cars as daily drivers, dirt,stone chips and all..
Any thoughts on my 2 choices ??..

Sorry to hear about your injury (as a sidebar I had an accident that resulted in every bone in my foot being broken & my ankle being broke fractured & dislocated as well as a lot of other breaks which resulted in long hospital, 9 years on I'm still walking with a slight limp as well riding so hopefully the diagnosis ends up being non amputation) I hope you recover well.

Now is there a reason you're looking at new?

If you go lightly used you won't even have to budget creep to heavily.

Great list there....and with a budget of approx £50k (should of said before) there is plenty to look at.

I want/wanted new for the piece of mind as now aged 55 yrs my tinkering days are over (i doubt i could work on many cars nowadays due to their complexity anyway) but i just wanted to be the first owner.

As you say you won't be working on the cars yourself so maybe go for approved used, in some cases you'll still be the first owner:

You don’t mention a budget but I looked at the hatches you mentioned last year and as you said budget creep and realistic look on depreciation and I ended up with anM2 which was a completely different level.

Jaguar F-Type Coupe, either a V6S or V8R. Great fun but also a very capable GT car for the commute, and make an epic noise (unlike the 2.0 Cayman or Alpine).

£50K gets you some seriously nice cars but highly recommend the M2 for a spin!
