„Have you had any other offers on the car?“

What are dealers actually looking to achieve by asking this question?
Surely they know I‘ll shop around for a best offer on my car. So even if I had none so far, I won‘t be selling to them if they lowball me.

And what‘s the best answer to it? Be honest? Or make up a number below which I won‘t go?

I would say "Yes I have" but wouldn't tell them what the offer is until they have made theirs.

Then again it depends how keen you are to sell or buy.

They ask it if they feel the customer may not be clued up on their part exchange value, very 1990s

hoping you say a low ish price and they will offer similar.

It'll help set their expectations when making you an offer. They might see you as wanting strong money for a ropey example or reasonable money for a good example. It'll also help them a lot if you low ball yourself. It could even put them off or make them think twice if you tell them that you've been to 4 other dealers who aren't interested. They'll think they've missed something.

What‘s the best answer then? Especially if you had no offers so far (there will always be the time when a dealer you‘ve reached out to is the first one).
