Fun for £5000...

Im looking to get a new car for around £5000 but preferably a little less.
I just want something fun (doesn't necessarily need to be fast), but something cool and maybe a little quirky.
I'd rather have something that isn't too likely to need loads of love and attention within reason.
Practicality not really a concern, im a single guy with no kids so can be anything really, a bit of boot space would be great though.
Any suggestions are welcome...what would you get in my position?

My son bought a 350Z convertible for 5 grand last year, seems a lot of fun for the money, pricey to run day to day with the expensive VED and 20 MPG but then, if its not depreciating, does it matter so much ?
Its amazing what folk will spend on diesels and EVs to save money, someone I know used to buy a diesel German thing every couple of years, not do many miles then part ex it, and then marvel at the VED and fuel I was paying, also on another 350Z, which I sold for what I bought it for.

Boxster 986S 3.2 are just about in the £5k budget, that's a lot of fun.
As above, Z4 3.0 might be able to sneak in. MR2, SLK 350 (maybe the hen's-tooth manual?), 330i either E46 or E9x for fairly sporty affairs.
In the more cruising/warbling category, 645i, Brera, some kind of A4 cab (maybe even an S4?)

Not sure what running costs are like compared to an mx5 but I think rust is less of a concern.

OP mentioned low maintenance. I ran an E85 Z4 for the last 8 years or so. It never once left us stranded, but we were constantly chasing lights on the dashboard, fixing ancillaries and the DMF juddered in cold weather.
It was a pain in the arse to run. We might have been unlucky, but do your research! 90% of Z4s on the road are not enthusiast owned and they are at the age where there will be plenty of ropey ones around and there may well be things to fix. Personally I wouldn't really recommend an older Z4 to anyone unless they are planning to make a bit of a hobby out of keeping it well maintained.

They do look great! bit scared off by reliability concerns, also the two seaters....I dont need loads of space but they rly are tiny!What do you think of a TT? still fun with a bit more car?
