Hello all. I currently have a 2015 Hyundai i30 1.6 diesel estate which needs replacing.
I need an estate (need to get my dad's wheelchair in for hospital trips) and I do around 16-20k miles a year, mainly on dual carriageways to work. I plan to buy using a combination of p/x on my car, some savings and a bit of a bank loan so budget will be around £19k.
Current search criteria is something post 2017, sub 40k miles and keys for me are reliability, servicing and running costs/intervals as it's not easy to get services in around other commitments and work. Not super worried about MPG but within reason! It will be a tool really, my petrol fun comes from vintage motorbikes!
I was looking at the VAG offerings like the Seat Leon, VW Passat etc but having looked into the service intervals going from 20k intervals to 10k seems a bit of a bitter pill to swallow.
Anyone have any ideas of anything else to look at? At the moment it looks like a newer version of what I have, but there's not many for sale!

What? An estate, reliable, to use as a tool. Almost 20 grand. Come off it ... there's 15 thousand in that budget on autotrader, including 84 E Classes. Back on topic ... the E-Class is a good shout for comfort doing a lot of miles, or an A6, might get a bit more kit/newer ones if you go Skoda Superb or VW Passat, probably cheaper to maintain too.

Thanks, as mentioned in the OP this was the direction I was going in but having looked at the compatible running costs and the regularity of servicing, it seems a backward step to me from where I am now, which is just a bit frustrating! These can have variable servicing intervals but a more sensible (in my opinion) fixed 10k miles oil change is simple and cheap and if you can't or don't want to do it yourself any indy will do it while you wait in about 30 minutes.

FWIW I'd say the nicest e-class is the early W212 with squarish lights and hood ornament. It has the elegance of a Mercedes and is modern enough not to feel like an old crock. I had one for a while and I think it's where I'd like to go back to having tried older and newer versions. The new version with the 9-speed gearbox is pretty amazing but it has horrible max-power styling, a fat flat bottomed steering wheel and they're hard to find with proper leather, most are plastic.

After 2 years with my 1.7 Optima 3 saloon, it is a great car, little gone wrong, comfortable and huge boot although should have gone with the estate as even although the rear seats go down they leave a small aperture.I would confirm you’re happy with the power to weight ratio, mine is fine when on the go but I so sometimes which for more acceleration.
Shouldn’t complain too much as got a faster car which costs a lot more to keep on the road than the Optima
