New SUV - anyone owned/driven the following

My wife wanted to change her 8 year old Evoque for something a little newer, bigger and with less squeaks and rattles

There are 4 cars she's interested in ranging in price from 45k to mid 60s and I wanted to see what peoples thoughts were of the following including if possible reliability;

Mazda CX-60 PHEV - she quite likes this one in Takumi spec and it comes in at about 45k on Carwow

Lexus NX350 mild Hybrid or 450 PHEV - great warranty level but top end of budget especially the 450

Volvo XC90 (not sure yet what engine) - she's not sure on this one yet and I've heard a few tales about service levels and reliability

Genesis CV70 or GV90 (Not the full electric) - bit of a curveball and no dealerships to speak of

Mazda - Love the Soul Red Crystal paint they offer, looks lovely! Can't comment further as I haven't driven one.

NX - I liked the drive, the build quality was fantastic on the one I test drove and there's really not a lot to dislike. My OH really didn't like the interior, she felt that even in the 2023 model it was just a bit drab and wouldn't age well. By the time we'd got the spec we'd want it was just a bit pricey for what we were wanting.

XC90 - A foot longer than the NX, a literal ton heavier and the model we drove just felt really top heavy with a lot of lurching on roundabouts. The infotainment system is absolutely dreadful, having to control everything via that central screen which was far less responsive than the screens of most competition was the icing on the cake when we would already be stretching the budget on one of these.

Genesis - Haven't driven one but I love just about everything Genesis is doing.



Just as another option, when we were hunting for an SUV as a family/dog wagon we really struggled and ended up stretching the budget to check out some other options (X5, XC90, GLE) and none of them were ticking the boxes. I was at my local Hyundai test driving a DCT i30N and mentioned the struggle I was having to find a good option, they gave me a test drive in both the Tucson and the Santa Fe hybrids and I was sold. We ended up ordering a Tucson Ultimate (230PS) and it's genuinely the best <£80k (new) car I've driven in this category, made even better when it came in at £38k.

Are they not just a Q5 in a posh dress? (I've no experiance but thats what I've heard on here)

XC90 is a pretty big car compared to the others. Unless you need the monster boot and 7 seats have you considered the XC60? Pretty much the same car but not as big, so a bit quicker, bit more PHEV range, and a bit cheaper.

Can’t really comment on ownership as we’re still waiting for ours to be delivered, but I found it amusing to play with on the test drive, and the Google infotainment system seems to work nicely. T8 version doesn’t want for toys.

The GV80 is a great place to be & a very good option the 3.0d has the right amount of grunt the fit & finish is spot on too, you can get a low mileage year old model for sensible numbers:

The 2.5T isn't the pick as it has to be worked too hard.

I’d be going a BMW X3 with your budget.

Not the biggest fan but if you just want an A to B cars it’s hard to look past the Tesla Model Y.

This was my first thought. We considered a XC90 but didn't need the extra space and reasoned it's probably due a new model soon as a couple of minor face-lifts they've been about knocking on a decade in their current guise.

We've a XC60 PHEV. Served us well as a family car over the last 2.5 years, it's really comfortable for longer trips, and the plug I'm hybrid means that 95% of our journeys are within pure electric range. Now that we've a dog we may need to invest in a roof box. It's got enough pull when required with 400 bhp. Its an odd one as it doesn't feel that quick. I really need to get a spreadsheet together to figure out if the money saved on fuel is more or less than the higher purchase price.

I previously had a T5 which returned 27 mpg after 2 years and 20k miles. The XC60 has returned 60 mpg but leccy has gone up a bit...... the latest generation XC60 PHEV returns an advertised 50 pure electric miles so even if you called it 35/40 we'd barely ever need to use the ICE.

Just noticed your post about the CX-60. I actually work for a Mazda dealer. Interestingly, 90% of our CX-60 customers have come from an Audi, BMW, Merc, Jag or Volvo. Our last px for a CX-60 was even a Disco 5. Worth looking at (but of course I would say that). If it helps, we have 2 x new CX-60 Takumi's due in the next 10 days.

we've just got a 2019 xc90.

it just does everything well. very well. better built than landrover/vw stuff. its a 2.0 b5(mild hybrid oil burner).

Its a big car, however with 3 kids, 2 dogs, we use the space. they had 2 years warranty and 2 free services on used approved, which is worth a few quid alone.

Never found it lacking in power, we also tow a horse trailer with it, which is likely 2 tonne ish loaded on its own. zero issues. get a 'pro' spec with air suspension though for better ridge quality(ours has optional 22 inch wheels and it rides lovely).

I do like the rx450h also.

I've driven a few hundred miles in the XC90 plug in hybrid.

Unfortunately mine wasn't charged, so it was running purely on the petrol engine.

I was only getting 24mpg on mainly motorways.

The one I drove was great value though, list price was £85k and the one I had on loan was on sale for £58k with under 1k miles.

It's a big vehicle, but drives quite well.

I didn't think much of the far rear seats, they were heavy and a difficult position to flip them up. A discovery was much easier in the rear.

Have you considered the RAV4? Just got a 2019 for the wife and it really is a lovely car, got the Dynamic model, which comes with full leather amongst other toys, should come in around your budget.
